On May 6, 1937, the largest hydrogen airship ever built began to prepare for a landing near Lakehurst, New Jersey -- but bad weather rolled in and forced the Hindenburg to remain in the air for several hours.

When it finally began its descent there was a flash of light, and the Hindenburg burst into flames.

Thirty-six people were killed.

Wow, watching the YouTube video and listening to the reporter and his pain. Is still amazing as it was back then. ( mind you this is way before my time )

The radio commentator was fired, I believe, for this display of emotion on-air.

Dr. G., according to WIKI, you will be happy to know that is an urban legend and did not occur:

An urban legend has it that Morrison was fired by WLS for his emotional reaction, but according to the station's weekly magazine and Morrison himself, this is not true. In fact, he was highly praised by station management, and the story of how he and Nehlsen made the recording was described in detail. It is possible that the story of him being fired came about because Morrison left WLS a year later to work for the Mutual Broadcasting System and that network's New York flagship station, WOR.

Sadly I now related the phrase "Oh the humanity" instantly with "Les Nesman and WKRP's Thanksgiving Day on site promotion" TV episode.

It's my reaction as opposed to the reaction of Chimpur.

I don't mean to be irreverent to this disaster, it's just my brains first thought when I read or hear the phrase. Again I apologize for the derailment.

It's even worse for me, I've been totally corrupted by the internet.

From the first time I ever heard that quote, and I have never changed my mind on the matter, I thought the use of the word "humanity" in the context strange. Seems to me the word "inhumanity" would have been more appropriate.......

Interesting perspective, rgray. I personally would go with "humanity" as in "oh, the people", in that I use the term "inhumanity" in a context that refers to a harsh injustice done by someone to another person (or a group of people undertaking inhumane acts against other people). Still, I see your point. Paix, mon ami.

Is it just me or did this exact thread appear before? Every post I read here feels like I have read them before, including "Oh the huge Manatee"!

Or is it just Deja vu?

Cheers

It must be Deja vu all over again, tilt. I just started the thread since it was the anniversary of the actual disaster.
