: iMac stopped recognizing printer

When I purchased my new iMac (27") last fall, I used my HP Deskjet 932c printer. The Mac recognize it and I used it with no problems. About a month ago I purchase a new printer, an Epson Stylus Photo R2000. When I went to print anything there was the option of choosing between either printer.

Problem #1: My main word processor is OpenOffice. It worked well with my HP 932c. When I tried to use OpenOffice with the Epson R2000 it would not print (yes the printer was set to the Epson).

Problem #2: I took my HP off line to use with my PC for my income tax. When I connected the HP 932c back to my Mac, the Mac would not recognize it was back. When I went into the system preferences this printer was no longer listed as an option. I have changed cables, turned both Mac and printer off and restarted to see if that would help. No such luck

Is there a way that I could use to get my Mac to recognize the HP 932c? Has anyone else have a problem using OpenOffice with an Epson R2000?

Felix

Both HP and Epson have had Mac printer driver updates in the last few days. Trash your printer files and hook them up to your Mac again, should re-download after a prompt.

Things are back to normal. The HP printer is working fine.

So then the OP's issue was the new updated drivers wiped out the previous settings? Or the newer drivers dropped support for the printers in question? I'm just trying to wrap my head around what may have happened..

Yup, any and maybe all of the above and one reason I have all the latest HUGE HP/Apple software updates set to Ignore as 99.9% of the time I don't need any and when I have checked, there were NO version updates for the two older HP printers we still use in a small local network.

And that includes an old Mac serial HP Laserjet 4ML!!! I don't think there will be any update for it, and may even get removed with any recent software download/update!!!

And as our home builder kept saying, sh't happens!!

I have no idea why Apple and HP etc. supply such a huge software update when 99% of the driver software hasn't even been updated.

BTW: have a look in your HD/Library/Printers folder for all the often HUGE surplus crap that these "updaters" install.

You'll probably find all kinds of various pdf language 'help' files as well as an image of every single printer model the printer company ever produced and more.

Quite gross actually.

Bottom line, if it's working, check if any "update" is actually needed.

And for any SSD users, such unnecessary Gypsy printer files can sure take up a fair whack of their prime drive real estate.

Nothing reflecting to you with your post, but it just hit an annoying nerve with me for the often surplus crap that the "Software Update" too often supplies and suggests. ;)
