Looking for a book reader would love the iPad but thinking of the kindle because it would be for reading mostly.
Any thoughts?

Thanks Kevin

You're asking the question on an Apple community forum, I think the overwhelming response will be iPad.

In my usual ever-helpful mood, I'd say it depends on what and how you're reading. I have both. If I am reading something that has illustrations, the ipad, hands down. There's no question, as well, that the screen of the new ipad makes the text as sharp as a book. On the other hand, the kindle is much lighter and has incredible battery life, which makes it better if you are reading for some time, in bed, or while travelling. While the kindle weighs about the same as a small paperback, the ipad is heavy enough to be uncomfortable over time.

i was thinking about getting my Mom a Kobo for Mother's Day (now that they've dropped the price on the Kobo Touch to $99)

any feedback on the Kobo?

I have the original Kobo and I love it. Once in awhile it's out of battery so I'm forced to use my iPhone to read books. The eyestrain due to the backlighting makes it unbearable after awhile.

The $99 price point of the Touch may be a good incentive to finally get me to upgrade.

I have the iPad but I wouldn't recommend it if it's mainly for reading, you certainly can (and I do) read on it but if that's all you are looking for it is overkill. From what I've seen of the kindles and kobos they are fairly evenly matched and the deciding factor would more likely be which ecosystem you are comfortable or have already bought into.

Depends.

If you want something that will do READING and maybe one or two other basic functions well, then a Kobo or Kindle Touch (not Fire) would probably be a good idea.

If you want something that can do reading and a WHOLE UNIVERSE of other stuff, then you want an iPad. Particularly the latest one.

An additional feature for the Kobo over Kindle is the ability to "borrow" e-books from your local library. If you read a lot, this can save you a lot of money.

For easier reading on the iPad adjust brightness and even try out the night reading setting, it makes it alot easier on the eye.

I have a Kobo Touch and an iPad. When I don't want to stare at the active screen (like before bed), or any time I just want to read undistracted, I use the Kobo. Most of the rest of the time I use the iPad. The Kobo Touch is pretty cheap now, and your books automatically download to all your devices and sync bookmarks, notes, etc.

I also borrow books from the library on my Kobo, they have a pretty good selection. Great for when I don't want to shell out $10+ for another read.

Also, I recommend against Kindle. You can't load books borrowed from the library and you can load books purchased from other stores like Sony. Kobo's selection is quite extensive but once in awhile you may have to purchase your book from elsewhere. Pretty much every store and public library uses the .epub format, although independent author stores like Smashwords will have books available in Kindle's .mobi format.

If you don't like the thought of tying yourself to one store, I'd choose Kobo or Sony's eReaders.

Just reading? Not the iPad.

More than reading? iPad

I use my iPad and iPhone for reading, but I use the Kindle app because I lets me to white words on a black background. I find it does not strain my eyes at all.

Now if you were to give me an e-book reader, I would be more than happy to use it rather than my iPad.
