A while back I had installed Adobe Reader to view PDF files when clicking on links in Safari. I don't know why I did I just did it and have regretted it ever since. So today I decided to remove Adobe Reader and just use Preview.

SO I dragged the Adobe Reader app from the applications folder to the the trash. Now when I click on a link to view a PDF it is just grey and no document.

How can I fix this?

EDIT: I went and dragged the app from the trash into AppCleaner and it found 6 related files. Should I remove all these? (See screenshot )

Try navigating to /Library/Internet Plug-Ins. There you should see the AdobePDFViewerPlugin. If you don't have one already, created a directory called "DisabledPlugins". Move the AdobePDFViewPlugin there. Close and re-open Safari, and it should use whatever built in default pdf viewer it has.

Also, you should probably delete those extra adobe reader files too. you can always re download reader if needed: Adobe - Adobe Reader download - All versions (http://get.adobe.com/reader/)

EDIT: May have jumped the gun on that one. Are you trying to open PDF's in Safari, or in Preview when you click the link?

Locate a .pdf file on your Mac, select it and do a Get Info on it, use the "open with:" option, select Preview then click the "Change All" box.

FWIW: I prefer to use Adobe Reader as I found many pdf files don't display properly with other pdf "supporting" apps.

From safari.

That would actually be in your Finder. Not sure if you're on Lion, if so, you'll need to pull a little trick to get into your "Library" folder.

From a finder window, open your home folder(the one named for your username) and then click on the Go Menu >> Go To Folder...
In the popup type in "Library" with no quotes, and that should get you into the Library folder.

A lot easier to just hold down the Option key which will show the “Library” directory as an option in the Finders Go menu.

And for 18 other ways : 18 ways to view the ~/Library folder in Lion | Macworld (http://www.macworld.com/article/1161156/view_library_folder_in_lion.html)
