Does anyone know if an app exists out there that would delay the output of the video camera on an iPad?

But seriously, why? I'm not questioning your need for this sort of thing, I just don't quite understand the application of it and I'm curious (and as an aside, perhaps that means a no-app-needed other way to solve your problem)

To delay a digital signal, you need to store it then read it back later.
So one thing you would need is enough memory to store 30 seconds worth of video, and enough CPU power to play it back later, simultaneously with capturing the current (real time) video.

One limitation you'll run into quickly is the lack of multitasking for the iPad - it's not as simple as queuing up two apps - one to capture and one to play back.

Yeah I figured it was a long shot.

I needed the app so athletes or students in a physical Education class could get instant feedback about what they just did.

So they high jump
Then walk over to the iPad and watch themselves high jump.

And you can't record the jump and play it back for them five seconds later because ...

.... because the next athlete is already jumping and the camera is needed to record them?

When the iPad is switched to playback, it stops recording the realtime event.

If that is the case then possibly you could use two iPads, in alternating fashion. Athlete A could watch the playback on iPad A while Athlete B is being recorded by iPad B. Presumably iPad A would be ready in time for recording Athlete C.

One problem with a fixed delay time solution would be that the athlete would have to be there to watch it exactly 30 seconds later - no pausing, no rewinding if they missed it.

Now if you were to use an old-style TV monitor (or small 12V lcd TV) and a standalone video HDD recorder (or a DVD-ram machine for that matter) with if need be a 12V DC to120V AC inverter and a 12V drycell battery, that would be a piece of cake...:-)
If the setup is meant to be used on the same location, say the same school or sports club, the bulk of such a set would be feasible. And probably most of the hardware would be available already.
Sorry, just "thinking different" the inverse way...

Hope I'm not too upfront for my fist post.

I created just an app you are talking about. It is called Bust a Move Video Delay (BaM Video Delay). And my intention was for this kind of use.

You can set a delay from 0.25 second to 2 min and the app continuously shows what just happened. You can have a 2x2 view with different delays so you can see it 4 times in a row. A you can switch to back camera so people want to see what they did don't stand in front of a camera. This way a group can use it.

I hope this is what you are needing and it works well :)
