Hi guys.

Long time lurker here.

I've searched but couldn't quite find exactly the info I was looking for.

So I've purchased my 2nd Mac and will be using migration assistant for the first time.

My question is; Is it better (faster, safer) to migrate everything from the old Mac directly or from a Time Machine backup on an external drive?

Would using Ethernet cable or USB in either case be preferred?

Thanks for any advice you can provide.

Just connect the two Macs with a Firewire cord. You might need a 400 to 800 adapter if your old Mac has 400 only and the new one has 800 only. You could also start with a brand new install and then copy your iPhoto, iTunes, etc. library over from an external hard drive.

Sorry I don't have expertise on any other way to migrate.

You can also use an Ethernet cable to link the 2 Mac together for migration. If you have gigabit on your old Mac. Then transfer will be faster than doing it over USB or FireWire.

Thanks for the advice guys.

Yeah I was thinking Ethernet between the 2 macs, the older one is a 2007 iMac.

Well thanks again guys, you've been a great help!
