I am going to erase and reinstall OSX Lion - having some issues, and decided to start CLEAN - so I'm backing up my stuff, but don't know where Lion stores all my Mail … can anyone help? Macbook Pro - OSX 10.7.3 Thanks

Mail is stored in ~/Library/Mail.
Library is hidden, but you can access it from the Go menu in Finder, while holding down the Option key.

what kind of email account is it? you might not need to worry about it if its an IMAP account

@ John Clay - thanks.
I'm doing an erase and install and will then retrieve my gazillions of email messages - some are business, and rather important that I don't lose them.

If you're using any POP email accounts, I'd strongly suggest using a proper save/recover method to keep all the status stuff intact.
Have a look and read at How to Back Up and Restore Mail in Lion | Mac|Life (http://www.maclife.com/article/howtos/how_back_and_restore_mail_lion)
You don't want to end up with ALL your restored email messages showing ALL as unread, or loose any!! ;)
I believe as broad said, any IMAP email accounts should be fine. But don't just go mucking about with the Finder in your Users Mail folder without understanding completely what's involved to keep things as expected.
