: Can You See This Website With Safari?
SINC Apr 26th, 2012, 07:59 PM For years now I have gone to this site to pick up ads for this pub from their site, and transfer the ads to my website using Safari on my MBP:
LB's Pub (http://lbspub.homestead.com/)
I have always just selected the Friday and then Saturday ad content from the home page by clicking first on the day, and then clicking and dragging the image off their site to my desktop, then paste it into my own site and uploading it.
Today when I tried to do so using Safari as always, I could not. Why the sudden change? I then tried Firefox, Camino, Chrome and Opera and all was normal with each browser and I got the content off no problem.
Anyone have any idea why Safari suddenly refuses to load the content of the site on my MBP? It's a mystery to me as I can see it on Safari on my Mac Mini, my iPhone 4 and my iPad 2 as well.

John Clay Apr 26th, 2012, 08:18 PM The site appears to load properly, but it's brutally ugly. ;)
Try clearing your cache, and refreshing. That should clear any broken bits.
IllusionX Apr 26th, 2012, 08:49 PM Safari 5.1.5 (6534.55.3) on OSX 10.6.8 and it is not loading for me.
edit: it's not loading on my firefox 11.0...
Joker Eh Apr 26th, 2012, 08:53 PM Could it be the Java update Apple released couple weeks ago?

tilt Apr 26th, 2012, 09:04 PM Safari 5.1.5 on Lion here and it loads just fine.
Cheers

Exactly as above--but it does load.
SINC Apr 26th, 2012, 09:21 PM Odd indeed, here is what I see in Safari Version 5.1.5 (OSX 10.7.3)
And yes I know it's ugly, but that's why they buy space on my site. :D

Same.

Did that, also turfed Safari, downloaded a fresh copy and reinstalled. No joy.
Ran OnyX, no joy.
Repaired permissions, no joy.
Reset Safari, no joy.
Yesterday it worked fine, today no way. Strange.
krs Apr 27th, 2012, 04:24 PM You seemed to have tried everything I would have suggested.
Tried it with Safari 5.1.5 on OS 10.6.8 - site loaded fine for me too.
CanadaRAM Apr 27th, 2012, 04:52 PM Process of elimination then -- if it is loading for others with the same version of Safari, then it must be a difference in your local settings or in your helper application(s) that is making it fail.
I think you need to trawl through the settings one by one.
Do you have popup blockers turned on? any security settings? Is Flash enabled, and what version? is Javascript enabled? etc.
SINC Apr 27th, 2012, 06:36 PM Popup blocker was on, turned off, no joy.
Block cookies from third parties and advertiser on/ off, no joy.
Javascript enabled, disabled, no joy.
Tried it all, no joy.
Still a mystery and still works in any other browser.
eMacMan Apr 27th, 2012, 09:57 PM Is private browsing enabled? If so maybe disable that.
SINC Apr 27th, 2012, 10:28 PM Nope, never ever use private browsing. Am the only one who ever uses my MBP so no need to hide anything from myself. At least not yet anyway. ;)
pm-r Apr 27th, 2012, 11:48 PM Maybe try a shutdown and use a Safe Boot and see what might change/work as a process for tracking the cause of your problem.
PS: the site works for me with SL and its Safari 5.1.5 version.
fjnmusic Apr 27th, 2012, 11:54 PM Safari 5.1.5. Works for me. Definitely fugly though, with cheap-flash type animations.

Can you create a new account, and login with that to test the site? If it works, then the issue is localized to your account. If it doesn't work, something's broken elsewhere.
SINC Apr 28th, 2012, 08:15 AM It is definitely a flash issue. I installed an automatic flash update and it simply will not play most videos. Oddly enough, YouTube works just fine, but nothing else. According to this site, it is a known Bug:
Adobe Forums: Working around the 10.7 Lion Flash Player settings bug (http://forums.adobe.com/thread/880967)
I have tried everything I can and still no joy including the adobe video bug fix. Nothing seems to work including reverting to an older version of flash. Can anyone tell me what version of flash IS working for them with 10.7.3?
Very frustrating indeed.

kps Apr 28th, 2012, 08:54 AM If it helps any I have the same issue with that site as you SINC.
I'm running OS X 10.6.8 and Safari 5.1.5 (6534.55.3). The site loads properly in Firefox. I have not performed the latest Java update which is currently available for 10.6.
SINC Apr 28th, 2012, 09:49 AM Flash works perfectly in the other two browsers that Adobe says the new version is for, ie: Safari, Firefox and Camino. That leads me now to believe the issue is with Safari. I am going to call Apple and see what advice they might be able to give me. Might as well get some mileage out of Apple Care. Will report back with the results later in the day.
SINC Apr 28th, 2012, 12:18 PM Turns out I have a corrupt admin account. Interesting though when they had me delete the java applet from the library, flash began to work on the site in the link above I had trouble with, but then not on my own site.
I just created a new admin account and am busy transferring files over to it. Then I will delete the old admin account and all should be well as Safari runs Flash OK on the new admin account.

Why would you do that?
Just delete the Safari support files, and let it recreate them. Do a backup of your bookmarks first. Wouldn't hurt to uninstall and reinstall Flash, too.
SINC Apr 28th, 2012, 01:02 PM That sure sounds like a lot easier way to do things John. Can you please tell me exactly what Safari support files and where they are located so I can try that first? I keep a complete daily clone so I assume I can just import my bookmarks from the clone, right?

Importing them from a backup would be annoying.
Just export them from Safari, and quit Safari, before doing the following.
Create a folder on your desktop to test this out, and move the folders listed below here.
~/ = /Users/USER/
~/Library/Safari
~/Library/Cache/com.apple.Safari
I would also uninstall Flash, and reinstall it.
SINC Apr 28th, 2012, 01:41 PM OK, I found and moved:
~/Library/Safari
~/Library/Cache/com.apple.Safari
But I cannot find:
~/ = /Users/USER/
Sorry to be a pain, but can you give me a pathway to that file please?

"~/ = /Users/USER/" was intended as a legend in case you didn't know what ~/ meant. It's not an actual folder - I used "USER" as a variable for your username.
SINC Apr 28th, 2012, 02:09 PM That too failed. Sigh, back to the new admin account.
John Clay Apr 28th, 2012, 02:31 PM Could try nuking the preferences, too.
Did you try loading the page without flash installed at all?
SINC Apr 28th, 2012, 02:32 PM I think rather than doing all this stuff, I am going to nuke the drive and restore the system from Time Machine and see if it clears things up. I can't be bothered friggin around with moving all my files to a new admin account.
fjnmusic Apr 28th, 2012, 02:49 PM Hey Don -- is it all pages or just this page that's messing with your images?
SINC Apr 28th, 2012, 03:34 PM It's hit and miss Frank. For instance I can now see that awful pub page, but I cannot see the analog clock nor the spinning globe at the top right of my own site.
Any browser but Safari works. It is only Safari that is the issue.

SINC Apr 28th, 2012, 03:44 PM Actually I haven't yet. I am too PO'd to do any more today. It's nuke and pave time next chance I get.
kps Apr 28th, 2012, 03:54 PM Some Apple schmuck tells you Safari fails to load parts of a page because of a corrupt admin account? WTF? If other browsers work, it's not an account issue...it's a browser issue. Bunch of nonsense, SINC and why would I have the same issue? Nothing wrong with my admin account.
BTW, in unix, the tilde ~ represents your Home directory. So: MacIntoshHD/Users/Username is the sme as /~ provided it's you that is logged in.
SINC Apr 28th, 2012, 04:22 PM Well, well, well, it's a miracle. All is fixed. I quit for a while then reinstalled Flash, Java runtime and then zapped Safari with AppZapper, downloaded a fresh copy and reinstalled Safari. I did that several times over the last couple of days with no success. Difference this time is I used AppZapper and got rid of everything. Incredible, but am I ever glad that is over.
Thanks for all the suggestions guys, they were appreciated.
And kps, in addition to being right about the Apple schmuck, maybe that's what you need to do as well. ;)

No offence SINC, but I think it'll be quicker just to launch Firefox if a similar issue arrises in the future....;)

Glad to hear and I'm glad you didn't waste your time using your Time Machine backup to re-install as there's a good chance it was corrupted as well.
On advantage to having and using a CCC backup, as it's bootable unlike Time Machine and a quick boot from it would show if everything was or was not working before doing any time wasting re-installs.
PS: Thanks for the incredible "Top Secret Drum Corps" video at your site.

None taken, but I do not have much use for FF. I much prefer Camino, which is what I was using during the episode. :)
Besides, I like ALL my browsers to work properly and it bugs me until I get them fixed and running right.. ;)

You're most welcome. I keep two daily clones on two separate externals, one in CCC and one in SD besides the TM backup. I take no chances. ;)
fjnmusic Apr 28th, 2012, 06:49 PM Glad there's a happy ending. When I encountered a similar problem recently with images not displaying on my wife's MacBook, I ante'd up and paid the $59 fee to Apple's tech phone diagnostics only to find out within about ten seconds there was a "display images" box unchecked in preferences. The guy on the line felt so bad he waived the fee. God bless Apple. Most of the time. ;)

All well and good as for user data, but a PITA when to OS and its associated files get mucked up, and recovery is almost like the old "Button-button- who's got the button" game as to which clone version actually worked.
At least a "nuke and pave" can be used when the OS is FUBAR and then hope and pray the Migration Assistant works properly. ;)
It's interesting that AppZapper and the re-installs worked and I'm sure you're grateful that they did.

Actually, BOTH clones work and boot perfectly and are tested every other day. The reason I use two different programs is to lessen the chance that one may fail. One cannot be well enough prepared. ;)

Just curious, but if you booted from your CCC or SD backup clones and if everything worked, including avoiding your latest problem, why you didn't just clone the working version back to your normal boot volume???? Or am I missing something??? ;)
SINC Apr 28th, 2012, 09:54 PM If I booted from either clone, both of them failed as well (I update them daily and they contained the same bug as the MPB HD). It took me two days before I realized there was an issue and by then, the clones were done and identical to the HD on the MBP. Simple as that. Even when I tried to restore the Safari app from TM, it too showed the same isse using files from two weeks ago, long before the issue began. I presume that was picked up the minute the old Safari app hit the MBP HD since it only restored the app and not the support files.
Who knows for sure. I am no guru, I just try to take things as they come. I am also tenacious and relentless in pursuing a problem until I beat it, either with the help of the board or by my own hand.
