: The mac's in my house wont access school's website

For some reason, ALL OF THE SUDDEN, none of the macs in my house will access my university's student login page.

I have never had problems until about a week ago. All of the sudden, whether in Safari or Firefox, our macs just won't access this one site. It's weird though because sometimes it will work for a few clicks, but then after a few clicks (doesn't matter what page I try to go on, it is a random occurance) my browser goes to file:///Applications/Safari.app/Contents/Resources/ and it says "Safari cannot connect to the server". A similar thing happens in Firefox.

I can 100% confirm that there are no issues with my school's website. It works when I use our windows computers at home, and even the Windows bootcamp side of my mac. It works on my BlackBerry too.

In order to circumvent this problem without loading up Windows I've had to tether my BlackBerry just so that I can connect.

So, it seems like it's a combination of a problem with my IP or something...? in addition to a problem with our macs? I just don't get it because if it's an issue with my IP then why do our windows computers connect to the site just fine?

Any help would be appreciated as this is such an inconvenience.

If you have updated you mac with latest it will turn off javascripting for security purposes. Just re-enable.

Do you just mean to click "Enable JavaScript" in Safari Preferences? If so, that option was already enabled, as well as the fact that this problem is not localized to just Safari.

Well... here's what *I'd* do...

1/ Try accessing the site with Google Chrome (http://chrome.google.com)

2/ If you're not already using it, switch to OpenDNS servers (http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/38793/how-to-switch-mac-os-x-to-use-opendns-or-google-dns/)

Here is what I was talking about. Don't know if it has anything to do with your issue. But it was about a week ago or so.

Apple Releases Java Update to Remove Flashback Malware - Mac Rumors (http://www.macrumors.com/2012/04/12/apple-releases-java-update-to-remove-flashback-malware/)

Apple just released Java for OS X 2012-003, an update to the Java implementation in OS X. The update removes "the most common variants of the Flashback malware." Interestingly the update disables the automatic execution of Java applets, and, if automatic execution is re-enabled, will again disable it if no applets have been run for "an extended period of time".

It might be a DNS issue with your ISP.

try changing your DNS settings to either google (8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4) or if you hate google, try OpenDNS (208.67.220.220. and 208.67.222.222)
if that doesn't help, revert back.

Java, not Javascript. 2 different animals.

This was exactly the cause. I did install this update and you're right, this problem did happen just after doing that. The university's website definitely uses Java.

Do you know what I should do to fix the problem? All that article says is to use the Java Preferences app but I can't figure out what to actually DO in that app to fix the problem.

I don't know how to fix the problem sorry. Someone in here will. I would like to know meself to make sure that the update did what it was supposed to do and disable the automatic execution of Java applets.

Well, the first question - is Java turned ON? In the General tab, make sure the checkboxes are checked.

And in Safari->Preferences->Security, is "enable Java" checked?

You may need to restart your Mac to get Java active - not sure. Definitely restart Safari.

Re-enabling Java may also require going into the /Applications/Utilities/ folder, opening Java Preferences, and checking the two boxes in the first tab.

This update also 'broke' my DNS-323-based print server. So far I have found no solution, :( and have directly connected the printer to the USB port on my monitor.
