: MAIL not working, BELL stumped
bobsmyuncle Apr 11th, 2012, 08:45 PM Months ago, my phone started giving me a popup to the effect of;
"password or email address incorrect...IMAP..."
I discovered that turning off WiFi corrected the problem which was good enough a solution at the time.
Jump forward to today, I turned WiFi on. The problem arose again. Turned WiFi off, but this time it didn't correct the problem.
During both instances, I can effectively log on to Gmail using Safari with NO problems.
Actions taken so far;
Restarted
Deleted account attempted to add account
With Bell tried to add account as "other" (instead of "Gmail") using POP
Nothing has worked. I'm now being told to wipe the phone to factory settings and restore.
To do this, after backing the phone up, do I simply hit "restore" in iTunes? or should I go into "settings" on the phone and use "Reset"?
As always, help is greatly appreciated.
smashedbanana Apr 11th, 2012, 11:32 PM A Question,
Are you adding a Sympatico e-mail to your phone or a G-mail?

I'm adding a Gmail account. Thanks for getting involved.
Joker Eh Apr 12th, 2012, 09:52 AM Is this the only email account on the 'phone'? Which iPhone (assuming its an iphone)? You up to date with the software?
Is this device jailbroken?
After deleting email account have you tried a hard reboot? Holding down home button and power button at the same time until the phone restarts and shows the apple logo.
Bell won't be able to help you as they can't do anything with Google or Apple. So forget them. Restoring will be the standard answer to everything.

There is and always has been a second Gmail account on the phone.
It is an iPhone 4
It is NOT Jailbroken
I DID perform a hard reboot (amusingly BELL instructed me to do this using the slider).
And likewise thanks!

So what is the other account? How have you determined that the Gmail is the problem? The problem could be your wifi. I have 5 gmail accounts and none have ever had any problem over any connection. If the problem first went away when you turned off wifi then that is where I would start.

The other account is a second Gmail account which has always worked flawlessly.
WiFi is working well (using it now actually).
bobsmyuncle Apr 12th, 2012, 11:10 AM Any thoughts on 'Resetting' through the 'Settings' menu opposed to restoring through iTunes??
Lawrence Apr 12th, 2012, 06:59 PM Sounds like a "Keychain" problem,
Try deleting "Sympatico" from your keychain.
You may have to re enter the info later, But hopefully that will fix the corruption.
bobsmyuncle Apr 12th, 2012, 08:51 PM Soooo I found the solution.
The problem is common apparently, and involves CAPTCHA.
There is a site (google it) that you visit and you confirm the address and password and fill in a CAPTCHA lol.
Now that said, I visited the site and needed to confirm an "Additional Verification Step" prior to
doing the CAPTCHA. Turns out that this was enough to repair the problem.
Thanks to everyone for the input!!

This should help.
If not post up and I'll help further. Good luck!!
viczx Apr 16th, 2012, 08:27 PM thank you for your reply, i tried that but not working still, although I'm not sure if i did it right. i don't understand what to put instead of your_domain.com, is it meant to be my email address? if so it didn't load a page. i used https://www.google.com/accounts/DisplayUnlockCaptcha and proceeded but still no luck.
i tried deleting then adding account again, but i get a message about can't connect to ssl or something. i did a full restore but still the same thing :'( any help you can give is appreciated.
bobsmyuncle Apr 18th, 2012, 09:20 AM I'm certainly no expert lol so I'm not sure what direction to point you.
I'd start with a simple Google search for Gmail and CAPTCHA there are a lot of entries.
Another possibility in your case is the outgoing POP3 which you can access by adding a new account, choose 'other' and go from there. I believe it would be pop3.gmail.com but a Google search or someone here would ensure the accuracy.
Sorry for the delay in responding I've been 'offline' the past couple of days.
viczx Apr 18th, 2012, 09:35 AM Hi Bob,
Thanks for the advice, I have found many people complaining about not being able to use the mail app. Some people have managed to solve their problem using the Captcha, and some haven't. I became fed up and downloaded the gmail app, which actually is pretty good so I'm content with it. Ive given up on the mail app for now but will try the pop thing and put an update here in case anyone else has the same problem.
So thanks for your help.
Vic
bobsmyuncle Apr 18th, 2012, 11:10 AM Another thing that you can do is have the Mail app connect to the Desktop server, not the Mobil server as that is the likely source of whatever problem you are having. I know this can be done, but I'm not certain how at this juncture. I'll try to retrace my steps to figure it out when I get the chance.
