Hm. Well... it's the same issue that affected many clients of software developers who moved their stuff into the MAS: If you don't already own 9.x, you need to buy it (if the MAS doesn't automatically recognize your existing install of iPhoto).
In my case... I bought a new MacBook Pro...
My 15" MBP was new in December 2011, so one would think I would have the correct version of iPhoto in my current version:

MAS doesn't recognize any software you have installed via other means. I have iLife 11 purchased just before MAS came out and so I have to update via SU. Even Aperture where I paid full price from Apple for the discs soon after was available on MAS for $79. I wish Apple would allow us to download from MAS without being charged again so we could associate these apps with our Apple ID.
If I remember correctly there was a way to associate all the iLife apps... I do remember somewhere clicking on something like that. Although iWork stuff isn't linked up.
