Wifi to go

Huawei MiFi E586 review | from TechRadar's expert reviews of Modem routers

Bought one here in Australia so I could roam around and after a bit of futzing damn thing is a treat.

Unlike a USB stick nothing is attached to your computer - it even comes with a wall charger or you can charge from the Mac through USB while using it - the Wifi can be on or off.

Right now since we effectively live in a Faraday cage due to the hose construction - it's hanging in a tree outside for good data reception and the wifi is solid. Actually works better this way than attached by USB.

I will get this one unlocked ( they are available unlocked ) and it will be a good device when we travel as prepaid data micro simms are available.

I think Rogers and Bell have a similar device.
It cost $89 all in here with 6 gigs of data.

With skype it makes calling out straight forward as well.

Being able to position it for maximum reception is excellent and there are auxillary antennae available for better reception.

Supports up to 21.1Mbps

Not a bad approach for iPad users and being able to park the thing by the window for good reception while lounging elsewhere in the hotel room to work on the laptop is a treat and GF and I can share the same device without tethering to each other.

Useful device.

Cradlepoint also has a series of data-cellular routers including a battery powered mobile one
CradlePoint CTR35 Wireless N Portable Router | CradlePoint
These work with USB datacell sticks like the RocketStick and the Telus Sierra sticks.
