Has anyone else noticed that Safari beach balls all the time when it first gets to a site? and every now and then on the same site? It is annoying as heck. I have switched to chrome now as it loads fine and runs fine. I use Onyx as a maintenance app etc.

I've been noticing some myself the odd time. It looks to be that one of the urls are not coming up some times. If you watch the lower left corner of the Safari Window you'll often see it stuck on one of the last URLs.
BTW, you just hit post 2000 with this question.

Which version of Safari? Which version of OS X? Are these plain-jane sites, or do they have Flash, etc.?
it just started doing it on almost every site. Seems to take along time to load (of course it beach balls). I have Safari 5.0.4 installed.

Try clearing the browser cache in Safari, this might help. Also if you are using your ISP's DNS servers try using Google's public DNS servers or Open DNS.
Not just Safari. I have noticed that since the 10.6.7 Update no matter what browser you use it beachballs a lot now. Even on my new Macbook Pro 13 inch it does the exact same thing.
Try TechCrunch. Long delays, 100% CPU usage and beachballs. This is recent. I do have some plugins/extensions in place.
Just tried it Atroz, and it loaded quickly - no issues. I did NOT update to 10.6.7 because of the PostScript TrueType font issues and the fact that I'm in the midst of a big project and simply don't have time for any nonsense! Running Safari 5.04 with AdBlock, ClicktoFlash and A Better Source extensions installed.
I noticed it for sure after 10.6.7 to be honest. Never made the connection (SORT OF SPEAK). I don't have any issues with any other browser though.
