After much wailing and gnashing of teeth, I made the first step today; I bought a 13" MBA.
What a gorgeous piece of gear. Though I bought this first, it will serve as a second machine for me; I'll be picking up a 27" i7 iMac the week after next when I'm in Calgary.
I had briefly considered an iPad over the MBA, but I just can't bring myself to the idea of no full keyboard for web use, as most of my time is spent on forums like this one.
Also, the Air will allow me to do much more when I travel than the iPad would. All that said, the specs of the base 13" MBA should do me well: 2GB Ram, 1.86 Ghz C2D,128GB flash.
I looked at the 11" also, but the longer battery life, faster bus speed and SD card slot were what sold me on the 13.
Best of all, after neither of the independent shops in town had one in stock, I went to Staples, where the price had been slashed by $50! I'm not sure why, as the Apple store price was still $1349, but $1299 is what I paid.
Once I get fully migrated to the Macs and comfortable with the OS, I'm going to give my old Compaq laptop to my mother.
The insanely-greatness might be lost on her for playing solitaire and checking my sister's Facebook account!
She's only ever been a Windows user also, and I just don't see the compelling reason for her to switch; perhaps down the road if I upgrade from this machine, she can have it.

Maybe she'd appreciate an iPad.

I've thought about an iPad for her, but I'm not sure she'd like the touchscreen keyboard either... she learned to type about 45 years ago on a mechanical typewriter!
Her birthday just passed, so perhaps for Christmas.

Mother's Day is coming up... You could surprise her with an iPad. Besides touch typing isn't that hard to figure out it's only fingers.

So, you get her the very nice Bluetooth keyboard....problem solved.
