Help with External Driver and Back-up

Hey guys and gals,

Looking for a little help to set up my new external drive.

Background: I have been working with Macs since the early 90s. I think we worked on system 5 back then. I knew enough about them then and could handle most issues. But I took a 10-year break after leaving the publishing world and am not as up to speed as I used to be. Certainly not as confident making changes.

Anyhoo . . . I have a LaCie 500gig that I am using for backup of my imac. But I bought a 1T today and I want to use that for backup and the 500g for an external drive. How exactly do I do this. Is it as simple as hooking the computer to the 500 and the 500 to the 1T and then telling Time Machine about it? If so, how do I tell Time Machine? What's the best way to delete everything from the 500g so that I can start using it was extra storage?

Any and all help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

If I understand you correctly, you want to use both drives for storage but one, in particular, you want to use for backups via Time Machine, right?

What kind (manufacturer and model) is your 1T drive? Is it in an enclosure and, if so, what kind of ports (USB or Firewire) does it have? What kind of ports does the LaCie have? What version of Mac OS are you running?

Thanks for responding! Actually I want to use only the 500 gig for storage and then the 1T for Time Machine backup of the computer and 500 gig storage. They are both LaCie drives, they both have firewire and I'm running 10.5.8.

Since I posted, I have hooked both drives up to the imac through firewire. I then told Time Machine to switch backup drives to the 1T and, I'm pretty sure, I told it to back up the 500gig. It looks like it did all that over night. So . . . now I must figure out how to safely erase the data on the 500 gig (was being used for backup) so I can begin using it for storage.
