On my G4 are some applications I want to use but can't afford to upgrade. I also don't have the disks for them as they came with the machine. I'd like to be able to use them but don't have a ton of space in my office to have it and my laptop going.
Can I take out the drive and put it in an enclosure and have it act like any external drive? I know the applications will work...or expect they should because I have hooked the G4 up to the G5 as a slave.
And, if I can, does anyone have suggestions for an enclosure to get? Cheaper is ...more helpful at this point...but I do need it to work.
Thanks

Has no one ever put an applications drive in an external? It seemed to work when I made the G4 act as slave to my G5. I'm trying to declutter and not have so many big machines going...if this is possible.
No thoughts anyone??

Should work fine - as long as the operating system that you're using on your laptop is compatible with the applications themselves. If all of the applications work fine on 10.5 for instance, and you're using 10.5 on both the G4 and the laptop, I wouldn't expect any issues. If you're running 10.6 on the laptop and have older apps running in 10.3.9 or 10.4.11 on the G4, it's possible that you could have some problems - it depends on the applications (and their versions/requirements). You haven't given us any info on this, so it's a little hard to say.
You'll need a 3.5" enclosure that takes PATA/ATA/IDE drives - NOT SATA drives, and those are becoming a little more difficult to find just because no new computers use the older PATA drives any more and only Western Digital still make PATA drives.
Do you want to use USB 2 or Firewire to connect? USB 2 will be cheaper, but might be a little slower. What ports do you have available on your laptop?
Says it works with Macs. Of course, this is only an acceptable solution if you don't mind working on your G5. If the goal is to work on the laptop, then the external drive enclosure is the best option, with the caveats above re: OS and application compatibility.
And a further note - SOME applications are drag and drop installs, so you don't need the install disks as they can be copied. Adobe apps and MS apps are generally NOT in this category, however.
I have had no issues running applications from my main HD when booted from an external so should work the other way around. Obviously app needs to work with whatever OS you happen to be booted in, that is a Panther app that had to be rewritten when Tiger came out, obviously will need still Panther to run and so on up the ladder.

Do NOT Touch this computer!!! Touching this computer WILL cause irreversible brain damage.
Thanks for all this info. It's really helpful! And, I didn't realize about the different enclosures.

When I ran the program through the G5, the program was in Panther yet the G5 was in Tiger. (sorry for the awkward wording) It worked fine. Maybe that'll be the way even with Snow Leopard?

Not necessarily - you do need to check the system requirements/incompatibilities with each program. When you're booted into the Snow Leopard, and start up an application on another hard drive, you're still running Snow Leopard - NOT whatever the installed OS is on that other drive. So the application has to run under Snow Leopard. There are some that won't, or won't do it well.
