Dialing

I work from home and use a MacBook Pro. I have a standard phone line that I use.

I was hoping there was a way to dial my phone from the MacBook. All I want it to do is dial the phone, then let me work from the phone for the duration of the call.

Can that be done?

Thanx

Oh for the good old days of the excellent Global Village external modems like their Speakerphone model, their excellent software and maybe throw in a HyperCard dialing stack!!!

Probably your only choice these days with your MBP is to use one of the discontinued Apple USB modems or one of the Zoom and maybe US Robotics USB dialup modems.

Whether the software works or not with the latest Mac OS versions is another question one would have to check on, and even if entering the number to dial would be more of a hassle than it's worth.

To dial phones in most situations all you need is an app that will actually play the audio (DTMF) tones and hold the phone up to the speakers and it should work in most cases (some VoIP systems might try to filter out DTMF). I used to do this years ago with my powerbook at pay phones and freak people out LOL If you can find an app that will play the DTMF tones for your contacts (or maybe there's an address book plugin) this might work for you.

This app seems to do the trick, although for my needs $25 is a bit hefty ...

Here's a hint that tells you a free way to do this ... it's not a "plug and play" solution, you need to follow some steps (hint: read both the hint on the site and the applescript as you'll have to download some stuff to make this work). I just tried it and it works fine for me here ... the disadvantage is that it requires iTunes for the dialing so if you were in mid playlist you'll lose your spot
