imac G4 800mhz has new life-ish!

I recently bought a G4 "goose neck" imac, and upgraded it to Tiger. It's become a little project of mine. I know I'll have to replace the HDD, and upgrade the ram, but I think it's worth it. The thing has charm!
Anyway...
I have an external HDD hooked up to it, that it recognized in Panther, but doesn't in Tiger. It keeps telling me that the disk isn't in the right format and it offers to initialize it. I won't let it, because the disk has a lot of data that i want to keep, and besides - it hooks up to my unibody MBP just fine.
I want to use the external to stream content to my AppleTV (since the imac's HDD is too puny to stream as it is).
So...what gives?
Should I hook up a different external HDD and start from scratch?
Is there a trick to get the iMac to recognize the external i have hooked to it now?
??

The external is likely GUID-formatted - this is the Intel-Mac only format. PPC-based Macs will boot from APM (Apple Partition Map) formatted drives only. As to whether or not a GUID should mount on a PPC-based Mac for non-booting purposes, I'm pretty sure it should work. Is it connected via USB or FW? Does your iMac G4 have USB 2.0 ports or 1.1? (If connecting via USB.)

imac

Hi Lars

The imac has usb 1.1
It mounted to the imac under Panther, but when i upgraded the imac to Tiger it refused to mount, though it shows up in Disk Utility. Every time I hook up the external, there is a long pause, then it tells me that it does not recognize the external drive and it offers to initialize it, eject it, or ignore it.
The drive has only one partition, and it's journaled.
Thanks.

Fuzzy

Even if you get it to mount, you are going to have a lot of problems streaming it to you Apple TV. USB 1.1 is very slow, I would suggest not even to attempt to stream this way. Replace the internal HDD with a large one. I have a G4 as well with Tiger that I use to download music and movies. I then transfer this to an External HDD hooked up to my Apple TV (I used ATV USB loader to gain this functionality among many other good options). My network was down one day so I hooked the external HDD to the iMac to transfer stuff that way, it took at least 3 times as long to do this connected through USB 1.1 than it did over the wireless network to the apple tv with the external HDD.

What HDD would you recommend for an imac G4 with an ultra sata drive? Will regular sata drives work?
The worst case scenario is that I hook up a spatre external, and I format that to the imac.

Btw: thanks for the advice on usb 1.1. Truth told, I didn't think through about transfer speeds. On second thought, I'm probably better off just hooking the external up to the airport extreme.

The imac won't have Sata it will have ide drives. I just put a 250 gig HD in a imac G4 800 and it helps the unit a lot as it has 8 meg cache and is 7200 rpm.

Is it hard to install a HDD into a 700mhz flat panel imac?
What's the largest capacity disk I can get for that model, and where did you get yours?

Hey fuzzy....it's not hard but time consuming. You need some heat paste and time to pull it apart and a good working area. There are a lot of how to's on the internet. If your in the Collingwood area I can offer some help but other than that I can help via email or something if your really feeling uncomfortable with it.

The max is 120 gig's but if you partition a bigger drive than you can see all of it I believe.
