Hello, and a Question about Bookcamp, Windows 7, and RAM size
Hi,
I'd like to introduce myself. I am Kostas Kritsilas, and I live in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. I have been involved with Macs since the Mac II, and have owned a Mac II, a Mac IIvx, an early Core Duo iMac (still own it) and a Macbook Pro 17" (late 2007). I also have a bunch of PC stuff (desktop and 3 laptops), and a Sun Ultra 80 workstation. I use all of them regularly except for the Sun. The PCs run XP Pro (1 laptop), Vista Home Premium 32 bit (1 laptop), Vista Home Ultimate (1 desktop), and Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit (1 laptop). Both the iMac and the Macbook Pro are on Snow Leopard (10.6.2). I have read on multiple sites that the Macbook Pro can take up to 6GB of RAM, and would like to upgrade it to that (currently, it is a 2.4GHz CPU, 3GB RAM, 250GB HD), but I am also thinking of using Boot Camp to install either Vista or Windows 7 on a separate partition. From the Apple documents on Boot Camp, it says I can only use the 32 bit version of Vista/7. I know that Vista/7 32 bit will have problems installing when there is 4GB or more RAM on a PC. Does this apply when I am installing Vista/7 under boot camp? Does this mean that I should not upgrade to 6GB of RAM on the Macbook Pro? If I have 6GB installed when it comes time to install Vista/7, will I have problems? Kostas P.S. Where is the cheapest place in Canada to get the 4GB memory module for the Macbook Pro (PC2-667/DDR2-5300)? Newegg.ca has a G.Skill module for $136 or so. Is there anybody else who has reliable memory for less? |

I'm not sure pricewise but you should check out CanadaRAM. He is a member here, is located in Canada and has a sterling reputation for fair dealing and good product. Sometimes cheapest is not best if you need aftersale service.

Thanks for the recommendation, but CanadaRAM doesn't seem to have a 4GB module for my late 2007 Macbook Pro 17". The heading for the my machine seems to indicate a maximum 4GB (2 X 2GB) of RAM, which is incorrect. Within that section, the only one that seems like it could be a 4GB module is the Certified 50191, but I can't be sure of that, as it doesn't really have much of a description, and the heading gives me pause. I'll keep looking, but the G.Skill module on Newegg.ca does have a lot of Apple users that are satisfied. Kostas |

I'm sure you are doing your due diligence, but don't overlook a phone call - CanadaRAM has always been most helpful on their tollfree line - I have used this to clarify listings.
(Disclosure: other than being satisfied with their service, I have no connection to the company.)
