24 inch vs 27 inch

I am planning on upgrading my 24 inch Prev gen iMac this week or next. My iMac will be coming to work to upgrade a Dual G5.

The specs of my iMac are this:
2.8 Intel Core 2 Duo
3 gigs DDR2 ram
256 mb video

I am looking at the 27 inch iMac with:
3.06GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
4GB memory
ATI Radeon HD 4670 graphics with 256MB

The specs dont look that much better on the 27 inch compared to the 24 inch. Does the i5 really step it up a notch? Would I notice a huge performance gain if I went to the i5 model?
I will be using this maching at home for some video work, Adobe CS4 plus the usual web, music, movies, etc.

The difference between your current 24" iMac and the C2D 27" iMac - performance wise - is less than substantial. If you're going to upgrade, definitely go to an i5 or i7 at the minimum; it will perform better in what it is you use your Mac for, not to mention better support (and speed) for future applications/Mac OS X.

i5 or i7 iMac 27" also comes with the ATI 4870 (instead of 4670), which should gives you better graphics and faster overall (thanks to openCL).

Core 2 Duo will be last gen pretty soon. At least get the i5 if not the i7.

I would be leaning towards the i5, the i7 as nice as it would be, is probably over kill and not worth the extra coin for my needs. Is the i5 in short order as well? Or just the i7 imacs?

All 27" iMacs are delayed 2 weeks according to Apple, but probably 3-4 weeks. I went from 2.4Ghz Core 2 Duo to the i7, and it's a huge performance increase. Well worth the money.

I like my 24 inch as well, but I get a very good deal buying a new one as I sell my current iMac to work and use that money, plus some of my own to upgrade to a newer machine. Usually do this every 2 years or so, works out well for me and for work not spending as much for a good machine upgrade and I dont spend as much for a home machine upgrade.

i went with the core i7 as well. i certainly don't 'need' the performance but it is future proofing and using it for day to day stuff is a blast.

Benchmarked: The Quad-Core i7 iMac is Super Fast - Imac i7 benchmarks - Gizmodo

I am sure the i7 is a nice boost, but I am going to go with the i5 when they are in stock. The i7 is a bit more then what I what I am willing to spend at the moment.
