Need a fresh start with new iMac

I 'just' got the new 27" quad i7 to replace my aging G5. I used migration assistant to move everything over from the G5 and everything looked great until I started using some apps and needed to drop in license keys. Not a big deal, I'll add them as I come across the apps that need them. Then I ran into files where I don't have the right permissions for accessing & writing to files that were on my G5. I haven't been through all the apps but a vast majority of files associated with most apps are presenting me this issue.

The last piece came when I connected a USB external drive. The quad i7 said it couldn't access/repair the drive and to backup and reformat the external drive. The G5 has no issue accessing & writing to the drive.

Then this morning I've lost internet connection with the i7. Apparently another computer is using the same IP yet my G5 and macbook are different IPS. It worked last night fine.

Since I'm literally less than 48 hours into this machine I think I just want to return it to it's original state. I obviously have the install disk but if I reinstall OS X from the disc will it reformat first? I want the i7 to be the same as when it came out of the box.

Then if anyone has any ideas why all this quirkiness I'm open to ideas.

Thanks!

A default install of Snow Leopard will do a "dirty" install, so it won't reformat. You actually have to erase the partition through the DVD's version of Disk Utility to wipe it out completely.

As for permissions issues, have you tried going to Disk Utility (in regular Mac OS X, not the DVD), choosing your main drive and then Repair Disk Permissions? No guarantees it'll work, but it's there partly for this sort of issue.

Thanks, I tried a disk repair and these were the results. The only permission changes I've made are to Moneyworks file so I could put an invoice together.

I did get my internet issue resolved, seems that the Airport Extreme had taken on the same IP overnight.

Now if I can get it to work with the USB external I can continue my photo editing for my clients.

Thanks

you didn't say how the usb drive was formatted but that's most likely the issue. can you verify what formatting is on the usb drive? current practice is to use 'mac os extended (journaled)'. not sure if there's an easy go around besides copying the contents to your g5 than using target disk mode to get the files onto your intelmac, reformatting the drive, and then copying them back to the drive from the intelmac.

Sorry, it's formatted Mac OS Extended according to the info screen. The Intel Mac can write to via the G5 on the network.

I a NAS attached to an Airport Extreme base that has sufficient room to copy the data to but to do it over the wireless network will take forever, I'll be copying about 600GB. I tried to attach the NAS to the G5 as I have in the past had it directly attached via ethernet to my MacBook. None of the computers are recognizing the NAS directly attached but it's accessible from the extreme base.

I think I might just pick up another 1TB external tomorrow, format as you suggest using the IntelMac, copy the data then reformat the other external the same way. It's not like I won't need the space as I pretty well fill 1TB yearly with my photos. I just have some sessions I wanted to get done this weekend and can't access the image files except via the NAS wirelessly which is painfully slow when we're talking 25MB files.

Any other ideas?
Thanks guys.

very weird! but if the drive shows up when it's attached to the AE, can't you connect to it via ethernet directly rather than wirelessly? at least you could do a speedier transfer that way. and if you do pick up a new drive i'd suggest getting a firewire 800 one, it'll be considerably faster than usb 2.0 although it may cost a bit more.

The problem is I have an older home with limited phone jacks. AE is on 2nd floor in a bedroom with the drive attached, the Mac is on the third floor where there are no phone jacks I tried dismounting the drive from the AE and using ethernet but it doesn't show up on any of my machines. The MacBook I used to connect through ethernet while the NAS was still on the AE.

Should I be able to have the NAS drive connected to the mac via ethernet without being on the AE? That would be ideal for me.

if it was me i'd just bring the imac into the room with the AE temporarily so that i could run an ethernet into the AE to access the networked drive. i was assuming your nas drive is connected via usb to the AE? afaik, you can't access a drive directly through ethernet, mac compatible drives are either usb or firewire with the proviso that a networked usb drive connected to an AE can be accessed through a LAN port (this is typically how you'd do a first time back-up since as you've said a wireless backup is not very efficient).

OK - gotcha!
Then I misunderstood when the sales guy at Tiger Direct said I could connect direct with ethernet/usb to the NAS with it not being on the AE.

I'll see if I can make room tomorrow to take the G5 into the bedroom to copy the usb external drive to the NAS.

Thanks
