NOTE: Cloning will erase the target drive that is the drive or the partition you are cloning to.

Personally I would try to find a FW case to match the iBooks drive that way you can boot from the external clone and give it a good test before you erase the original drive.
I mentioned that the drive is being replaced, it won't be wiped clean until my friend decides to do it. It is a 40g now and I have a 160g to go in. The 160 will start it's day in the external, cloned and then swapped with the 40. The 40 will then be installed in the external.
The fw case would be nice but not really needed when all is said and done.
I guess I will download CCC onto his laptop and go from there, thanks guys!

Thanks all!

Started at 5:00, downloaded CCC, took 1.5 hrs to clone(30g), could not confirm it works like you all said but went for it. Tore the ibook down, 12" 1.33 with 1gram and 40g hd, pulled the old 40g drive, installed the new 160g drive. Reassembled, it boot like it was never opened. Put the old 40 in the external, checked it and all is well.

Congrats on a job well done!!

I might be the only one in here, but I actually enjoy doing the iBook and non-uni MBP hard drive replacements. Something very satisfying about taking it all apart and having everything work perfectly when it's all done.

Cheers
Paul

No Paul you're not the only one, I enjoy tearing them down to fix/alter/etc. and make it work again/anew.
