Best Video Converter

I'm looking for a good video converter for my Mac that can handle as many formats as possible and give the best quality. I used until now VisualHub but I'm wondering if there's anything better, free or not?

VisualHub is quite good, and now that it's gone, VideoMonkey picked up from where it left off quite nicely. I use it to transcode files in other formats into mp4 files for AppleTV.

For encoding DVDs (of folders of .VOB files), I have yet to find anything that beats Handbrake.

MPEG Streamclip does a lot of conversions.
It also does editing and joining of segments.
It's free.

You can also check Handbrake as it does some conversions too.
I heard that the command line 64 bits version is really fast. I'll give it a try soon.

I downloaded Video Monkey but it seems it can only concert to Apple formats. The AVI/WMV options are blocked. How come?

Read this article and the comments that follow. There's lots of ideas for conversion software and generally good information:

I still use Visualhub for basic conversion work. When stuff gets tricky I've used ffmpegX. FfmepX has really helped me with subtitle issues when converting foreign movies but it does a lot of other conversion tasks as well. Not the easiest to use but with a little effort it can be quite useful.
