iPhoto - Resource Hog

I don't know what the deal is, but iPhoto is slowww. Oh, so brutally slow. For basic use or browsing, it's fine. For importing photos, it becomes a nightmare. iPhoto '09, version 8.1. (See signature for machine specs.) I had to transfer a full 700 even photos directly from the Nikon D40 this afternoon, and while it was transferring the 700, I had to walk away because the unit was unresponsive. (Activity Monitor: iPhoto = 99% CPU.) Even after the transfer was complete, iPhoto was hopping between 70-90% of CPU power.

Apparently, Aperture is more demanding than iPhoto, yet runs 2x better than iPhoto does on the same machine. (My library only has ~1400 photos. It's not massive.)

Ridiculous...

/rant.

I can't say what's going on there, but I'm not seeing quite the same thing here. I *do* see iPhoto become slow when importing those camera-made AVI type movies, and occasionally it will mysteriously "pause" briefly while importing photos, but generally a normal photo import seems to go by pretty quick.

I don't generally transfer 700 photos at a time, but if I did I'd expect it to take some time over USB2.
