Looking for buying advice and I am sure some people will think this is stupid, but here goes.

Would you buy a iMac g5 at this point or would you try and wait for Rev B's? And I say this due to the issues and plethora of problems associated with the iMacs g5's now..

A simple look at the Apple Discussion Boards will show you this...
I realize, it may be a little presumptuous to say this, but its really no secret alot of the imac g5's are very problematic right now.

I doubt we will see any bump until when? Maybe Feb/March?

Just looking for advice.

I would be buying the cheaper one, I have an external dvd burner and external HD....and I hope to sell my lill b/w

Macholic,

Do you expect a speed bump at San Fran?

If so, I will wait it out..

Have the rumors about a possible g5 eMac dies down?
Is it just too close in terms of cost for Apple to release a 'lower' prices g5?

I think you'll see a few surprises at Macworld this year. I'm with Macaholic on this one I'd wait.

This is ONLY my perception of things as they stand, currently:

I bet they'll ride out the G4 on the eMac for at least six more months.

I'm not sure that the iMac will get a processor bump in January. That depends solely on IBM and I don't have a lot of faith in them these days They might bump up the hard drive (always a welcome thing) and increase the stock RAM to 512MB, but that's just a guess.

My point is that, if you can wait, then why not? January is close enough. Sometimes, when Apple announces new or improved products, the actual release time may be weeks away. If they do make an incremental bump to the G5 iMac, they may be available, immediately. If you need a Mac before then, then obviously GO for it now.

When it comes to the complaints about the iMac G5: keep in mind that while it's true that 1st gen products usually have some bugs, the early adopters who buy said products are often the most difficult demographic to please.

Just based on the noise people are making, I wouldn't totally discount the 1st gen iMac G5s. Looking at Apple's recent history anyway, it's doubtful that Macworld will bring significant changes, if any at all. It would most likely be a minor speed bump. Considering the G5 chip production issues, I wouldn't be surprised if Apple kept most models the same. If anything, they'd be more likely to introduce some fancy new updated iPod (iPod mini 2?) since that's the fastest growing segment... and since it would have the secondary benefit of distracting from the G5 shortage.

A good yardstick for the "when to buy" decision can be found at www.macrumors.com in their "Buyer's Guide" section. It tracks the average number of days between product launches, and estimates when the next revisions are due.
