I would use proteus.

It is the best program for chatting on a Mac as for as I'm concerned. You can chat on AOL IM, ICQ, MSN, Yahoo and Jabber all simultaneously, using one program.

Hi,

You cannot login to ICQ through iChat. They do indeed use the same OSCAR protocol, and are in many ways compatible, however, iChat must have been specifically set to disable this (probably because ICQ has different file transfer methods). You can however, get an AIM/.mac account and add ICQ people to your list, as long as they are using an OSCAR ICQ client (simply use their ICQ# as their screen name). Google OSCAR and TOC to get a better understanding.

I would recommend Adium instead, especially over Proteus. Adium is under far more rigourous development, and has a lot more innovations existing/down the pipeline. Not to mention a more stable file transfer and oh yeah.... did I mention it's free? Proteus is shareware (no diss to Justin).

Hope that helps

I used Protues for a while, but since AdiumX has hit around .60, I haven't looked back.

AdiumX is the best Mac app I use, without a doubt. It also users fewer resources then Proteus, and is more customisable.

I find iChat too limited for my uses. If you like the look of it though, there's an iChat skin for Adium.

ravijo - FWIW, Justin sold Proteus to a company run by a bunch of his programming friends, and they are continuing development.

Justin was approached by Apple after he graduated to come work on iChat.
