I have been working with Rogers attempting to get my cable internet speeds even remotely close to the speeds that they advertise. While I realize that there are a lot of factors that affect actual performance and I don't really expect that, in the real world, I will get those speeds... I do feel that the speeds that I am getting are unacceptable.
Rogers advertise that with their standard "Rogers Hi-Speed Internet Express" you can get up to 3 mbps download and 384 kbps upload.
Rogers advertise that with their "Rogers Hi-Speed Internet Extreme" service you can expect to get up to 5 mbps download and 800 kbps upload.
With "Hi-Speed Internet Express" I was getting fairly consistent speed in the neighbourhood of 341 upload and 1215 down. Not terribly close in the download department is it?
I decided to purchase their Internet Extreme Modem to see if that would make much of a difference. I have been doing speed checks over the last week, below an average result. Note that my upload speeds were often half of what I was getting with Hi-Speed Express... figure that one out!!

Your download speed : 3026086 bps, or 2955 kbps.
A 369.3 KB/sec transfer rate.
Your upload speed : 187362 bps, or 182 kbps.
I even had a result of the following if you can believe it!
2004-11-10 18:00:15 EST: 138 / 20
Your download speed : 142220 bps, or 138 kbps.
A 17.3 KB/sec transfer rate.
Your upload speed : 21292 bps, or 20 kbps.
Who knows, maybe my results are pretty typical, but they need to do better, or I am returning the Extreme modem and getting my money back.
That said I am curious about the speeds that the rest of the EhMac cable users are getting.
Go here to test your connection:
2004-11-11 17:14:39 EST: 4016 / 485
Your download speed : 4113368 bps, or 4016 kbps.
A 502.1 KB/sec transfer rate.
Your upload speed : 497079 bps, or 485 kbps
The above are mine. You might want to make a few physical checks to your set-up. The Moto Modem that they feature in the HiSpeed X is not the strongest unit. And I found that out when I made the switch and had some rates that were about as quick as a cricket match. The signal coming into my modem was weak. why?? I found out that I was using corroded cabling (outside). A tech came a replaced them. And boom! All was good after that.
H!

Don't Know, but that is pretty indicative of what I've been getting this week. My modem seems to be mistuned to the down side. If tuned correctly, it would likely be at the 5000/800 mark.
Go to DSL reports and check the logged speeds. There are people getting 11000 - 12000 down on Rogers.
Edit- Just got this but my wife was on the Phone - Vonage VOIP

Sometimes I am amazed at how fast stuff downloads.
Now THAT's what I'm talking about, Bajan! Time to start bitching at Rogers!

It took a while for Rogers to admit that there was indeed a problem. My connection was almost the same as a 128K ISDN line.
After many calls and refunds the service (excluding NNTP and Mail) has definatly improved. I even had Sympatico for a couple months while waiting for Rogers to fix things.
Those of you who have problems should not sit back and do nothing. With enough compalaints Rogers will re-segment your network or monitor the conditions and present to their network department.
If all else fails, call Rogers' switch board and ask for the office of the president and or the fax number. Be polite and you will treated well.
