Talking Classilla Is Here!!!

All yee vintage Mac mavens 8.6 through to 9.x - Classilla has arrived.

They have taken WamCom Mozilla and updated it. WamCom was last worked on from what I can see in about 2003. It had some chronic problems in that certain pages were rendered cut off from the left side and certain pages with lots of top header info were totally botched. This appears to have been corrected.

If you already have WamCom Mozilla, it will pick up all of your bookmarks and any about:config entries you have made.

Best of all, it does appear to run faster that WamCom.

For all of you stuck firmly in OS X ... so sad not to have such excitement.

Classilla can be downloaded here:

Downloads - classilla - Google Code

Thanks for the link.

I decided to fire up my Sheepshaver OS9 install and try it out ... I haven't given it a full workout yet but I will say "damn impressive."

Seeing Apple's front page load up more-or-less properly compared to the laughable pile of excrement that IS ie4.5 is very satisfying.

IE is really only good if you don't have anything else. As it comes with the OS on the older machines, it gets you to the download for something better.

I have had a chance to play with this for awhile on my PB 1400 with G3 in it.

1. It defaults to no JavaScript. You have to enable it for each domain (it does remember the settings for next time). This makes it run faster than WamCom Mozilla it's direct parent.

2. It still won't render some sites. popsci.com becomes a dogs breakfast. However, if you go to View -> Styles and select none and reload, you get that fast retro inline experience.

The two together make a really good compromise for cruising the net on a retro machine.

My impression is also that it is more stable than WamCom. I am not getting freezes. This could be because of the JavaScript thing.

I've been using Classilla now for about a month and a half and it's definitely the "must have" browser for anyone still using OS9.

I have been using the WamCom version of Mozilla for several years, and Classilla has made it even better. There were a couple of sites that would consistantly crash WamCom Mozilla, but they're stable now in Classilla.

The best feature is the ability to turn off/on Javascript on sites as required. The default is to have Javascript turned off. This works great on ehMac since it cuts out most of the crappy advertising at the top of the page. There's a little icon at the bottom right of your page that allows you to toggle Javascript on and off. This is so handy that I wish my version of Seamonkey had this feature.

I haven't found any downsides compared to WamCom Mozilla, so this is a no-brainer.
