Yet another update which I shall happily ignore. That should leave me about 1/4 GB in arrears.

Just out of curiosity, why would you ignore?

The vulnerability patched is pretty serious. If you're curious what kind of fixes are included in the update, then look no further. Intego has been making noise about this one for awhile, so if you only install one security patch this year, this is the one.

First time I tried the patch on my iMac running 10.5.7 (after shutting down all apps), I received this message: "The update Java for Mac OS X 10.5 Update 4 can't be installed.

A new thread on the Apple Discussion group recommended running repair disk permissions. That did the trick for me. Might be the first time I've ever actually seen the repair permissions task actually...y'know...fix something in a noticeable way.

No I'm not saying that this process is bunk (calm down, disk-permission repair people).

Just sharing this note in case others encounter this issue.

Hmmm A quarter of a GB over slow pitch cable= 3 plus hours. Plus I can usually skip at least one and maybe 2 security, QT and iTunes updates with no harm done.

Anyways last time I got caught up I had to revert to the previous system as the latest and greatest Security update slowed iTunes to an absolute crawl. Why mess with things that work?

Long and short I wait for an absolutely miserable day, download the updates at the library, confirm my latest OS back-up. Run the updates and test very thoroughly. Once I am happy I create a new disk image of my OS while retaining the previous 4 disk images. I do toss the everything older than those disk images.

You can put off doing this update IF you do the following things:

1. Disable Java in Safari (preferences). I don't know about other browsers.
2. Disable the "open 'safe' files after downloading" option in Safari and other browsers you may use.
3. Don't run any Java programs (heh, this part should be easy, they're mostly crap anyway)

There! Now you can wait till you get to the library.
