My 4 year old iMac G5 is on its last legs... the video card is slowly dying, I've got screen artifacts everywhere, and this PPC platform just doesn't have the legs to support all the latest and greatest software...
Anyway - I was out at an Apple store on the weekend trying to get an impression for the difference between the 20" and 24" screens, and I wasn't very impressed with either screen with respect to pixelization, particularly with text.
Does anyone have any comments on the quality of the iMac TFT screens vs. what might be available in a good stand alone screen?
I know the 20" screens are 6 bit panels (which I couldn't really detect visually)... maybe it's the glossy screen treatment, I don't know... but it just seemed that my 4 year old iMac has a nicer screen than the new ones.
I've been awaiting the new iMacs since the current generation 20th century display 20" iMac was introduced. That's about a year and a half. I can only hope that the new base model does something about that TN panel AND retains firewire ports. If it does not keep FW. I would expect to see the current 20 incher remain available at least for the educational market just as the old white MacBooks were retained.
Since it is at least 6 years between computers for me I would hate to go back 2 years as that is the last time Apple made a computer that met my computing needs and my real estate needs. Price is also a concern or I would just go with a MacPro.

I seriously doubt Apple will change the 20" screen from the (admittedly crummy) TN panel back to an IPS or even a P/MVA panel. If anything, they've let the MacBook panels get worse, so I couldn't imagine them going back to a better 20" panel. It's the cost you pay for having a 20" iMac for what the 17"er used to cost.
FW is a tossup. I would expect that they'll offer FW800 on some of the higher end iMacs, if not all of them. FW400 is probably a goner (hasn't been a feature on a new mac since the iMacs were refreshed ~18 month ago)
Fingers crossed for some decent products on March 24th.

The iMacs were refreshed in April of 2008 which is less than a year ago.
I believe the crap 20" display was introduced about a year and a half ago. Remember because it was the determining factor in my not buying back in December of 2007.

You know, some of us actually like the "crap 20" display. I also like the flat rather than glossy finish. Just remember: there's someone for everyone, and Tommy's love was Becky.

IF you are not trying to reasonably closely match screen to print and don't mind the narrow view axis then indeed the glossy 20" iMac is quite adequate. While I prefer a matte display as well, the gloss is not the issue here. The real issue is that the display is 6 bit per channel which requires dithering in order to display the entire colour spectrum. Spent quite awhile trying to get several known images to display correctly, it was not possible.
It should be noted we are not talking about the white 20" matte iMacs here, but the newer 20" glossy ones.
