Problem with Vuze, and any other Bittorrent client.

For some odd reason, I am only able to get good download speeds "once" on a client. I may start a torrent at anytime in the day, get 500kb/s then quit the program. When I quit and restart the program I only get up to 25kb/s. Believe me even if I had 1000 seeders who were putting all of their bandwith towards seeding for others I still couldnt reach above 25kb/s. Is there anyone with a solution to this problem as my harddrive is quickly filling up with different types of torrent browsers (BitComet. Bittorent, Vuze, Frostwire, Limewire Pro, Transmission etc.)

Azureus?

As far as speeds go, I've read that ISPs can intentionally throttle (limit the speed) of that type of traffic. I've also heard that it can depend on the time of day etc.

I assume you've already tried this, but check the preferences to make sure you haven't capped the download speeds at 25kb. See also if you have the same issue with a single Torrent download or multiples.

Although your issue doesn't seem to be a be a problem with the client itself, I am also an Xtorrent user and it's money well spent.

Torrent clients are not intended for "fast speeds". You will generally get an initial "burst" of speed, then it will settle towards some number and idle away, with fluctuations. No matter the client (be it xTorrent, uTorrent, Azureus...) it is best to just let the Torrent run and build it's speed up, and let it roll with the tracker.

Of course, the tracker is important in the equation, and you have little influence on it, so if the tracker says you get a slow connection, you get a slow connection. Throttling can cause some havoc, as well as ISPs locking down certain ports - but a firewall that is set too high, or a firewall that is firewalling a firewall can cause just as much havoc.

Seeds are important, but you also need to have a good set of Peer connections. Advanced users actually set their systems to permanently Peer their connection, and even though they have the complete file, they will never go Seed. You actually get the best speed connecting to Peers of this sort, as Seeds generally dish out data to those who have the greatest number of completes - while Peers will swap data back and forth in a more fluid manner.

Curiously, this action actually mimics the functioning of the Internet itself, as the point of a torrent is to have an error correcting way of transmitting data between computers - something that TCP/IP never did address without resorting to a protocol like FTP...

You can also cap your own speeds - bottom right on Azureus. You may want to unbound this to see if you can attain greater speed. You may also want to check the Statistics tab to see of you can actually attain higher speeds, since this will vary by ISP...
