I am sorry if I was not clear. English is my second language and computer terms are language is foreign to me. I am also a very, very new user of MAC and trying to figure out if I really want to switch over from PC. Bought a used iBook G4 to see if I like it or can use it. |

No problem. This explanation was MUCH clearer.
One tiny note: MAC is not an acronym, it doesn't stand for anything. Just use "Mac" which is short for "Macintosh."
And now, on to your problem.

I downloaded an application. It was palced on the desktop. When I click on it to install the program Entourage openned as a new mail and added the application as an attachment. Could not install the program. I than changed the "open with" for that application but with a new download its doing the same thing. |

Here's what to do:
1. On the new download, select it (not open it) by SINGLE clicking on it to "highlight" it.
2. Now right-click or control-click on it and you will get a menu that has among its choices "Get Info."
3. Looking at the "info" (in Windows we'd call these "properties"), you'll see one called "Open With ..." You used this before with the last download. This time, however, we're going to do something slightly different.
4. Change the default "opening" app to whatever you changed it to last time, but ALSO click on the "Change All" button.
That should fix the problem. For the record, most downloads appear as a "removable drive" icon (a white icon) on the desktop, and click on that is SUPPOSED to give you a window with the installer (or app) appearing on it. It sounds like your system has gotten confused about how to handle installers.
If this problem continues to happen, I would suggest doing what we call a "nuke and pave," meaning to (after saving any files you can't replace) erase the hard drive and reinstall the system from scratch. This will solve the problem because what you describe is not the default behaviour, meaning someone or something has messed up the defaults and since you're new to this it might be easiest to just "start over."
I hope this helps, sorry if I was too brusque (we get a LOT of questions here and clarity is important), and I suspect that once you get past this issue you will enjoy your Mac!
