Going by memory here. Hopefully Lars or someone else more knowledgeable will confirm.

I believe the MBP's HD is not user serviceable meaning you will need to have an ASP do the swap to avoid voiding the warranty. Obviously at that point the new HD would be covered by the manufacturers warranty not Apples.

Biggest HD you can get right now for the 2.5" (9.5mm z-height) is a 500GB SATA Drive.

I picked up the Verbatim 500gb USB Ext. for $99 at SIGElectronics and I'm in the process of superdupering my old 250gb into the 500GB to swap them in my (outof warranty) MBP.

Nice. I am debating between getting AppleCare or getting a bigger HD. Hehehehe

I thought the new MacBook Pros have a user replaceable hard drive.

Mine is an original 2GHz MBP and the HDD is not user replaceable. I know this for sure but mine is long out of warranty. Not sure about the newer ones though.

Unibody MBPs have user-replaceable HDDs. All other MBPs HDDs cannot be upgraded without voiding warranty.
