It doesn't matter. As long as the serial number has applecare you are fine.

We used to be able to call Apple and transfer the registration to the new owner but the last few times I tried, Apple didn't really seem to care and weren't too helpful.

If the new owner calls, they will likely take their info.

Thanks Gary
I guess I'll just let the buyer know this. I will also contact Apple just to be sure..

I've had the same experience. I had a friend that bought a used Powerbook, and he wanted to make sure that it wasn't stolen, so he called Apple with the serial number. They basically said they don't keep track of stolen logs, and that indeed if he brought that computer in for servicing, he would be able to use the remaining Applecare attached to it's serial number.

So I guess this is both a good and bad thing....
