Used Macbook reset the password? File transfer via firewire?

I just picked up a used Macbook. The previous user forgot to remove his password... so if I boot from the install dvd will that erase any previous passwords that were used? Is there an easier way to reset it?

Also does firewire target discmode work with intel macs? I think that would be the easiest way to transfer my files from the iMac to this Macbook, any suggestions?

You can use firewire target disk mode with intel macs, unless the user has previously set an open firmware password, in which case you'd need to know the password in order to do so. I'm not sure about the install disks resetting everything though.

I believe if you boot from the install disc there is an option to reset password. This may have changed since I last did it on a 10.3 machine.

If so, you may need to know the original password to do this, though.

Actually when I did it you did not need to know the original password. I did it recently for someone with a mac mini running os x 10.3 who had forgotten their password. I don't know if it still is possible under 10.4 or 10.5.

Yea, unless he is willing to just do a wipe and reinstall.

for the boot password (cant remeber the name for EFI systems)

This was the right choice. You have a much more "barnacle" free system now.
