Just a rant of mine... I'm ticked that Westlake Interactive never finished the porting of the original Unreal Tournament to Mac OS X... UT2k3 reminds me too much of Quake (stupid sounds, even worse character skins) and I just love the original UT so much more.. kinda said it'll never have native OS X support. Booting into OS 9 is just a pain just to play some rounds..

Anyone else still play the original?

Actually, the port of the original UT is in Ryan Gordon's hands now. He received the code from Westlake. He's supposedly done some work on it, but only in his free time. I've given up on ever seeing it ported to OS X. Unfortunately UT2003 is nowhere near what UT was - UT2003 seems to be much more fast paced, especially the CTF. And I miss the sniper rifle - no snipers for me to snipe. The reason I go by the alias SniperKillerOSX in UT or SniperKillr in Halo. I just started playing UT2004 and it may be a bit better but still no UT. HALO is about as close to UT as I've seen.

Actually, I immediately found UT2004 to be very much like the original UT. I played the UT2003 demo a few times and it not feel like UT. Somehow, they did something that made UT2004 feel like home.

Of course, as soon as you get hooked on Onslaught, any concerns about whether it feels like the original UT go out the window. Onslaught is the best thing to happen to FPS games ever. "Pancake!"

Original UT among other OS 9 games was one of the factors which influenced my buying decision to buy the last generation G4 dualies instead of the G5. I will probably never sell my MDD G4 just so I'll be able to play these "classics". Over the years, I'll trick it out to be the best OS 9 Mac possible, in the spirit of Macaholic's rig.

So... who's up for a couple of rounds?

Yeah, Onslaught's been alot of fun. I've always liked the team games like CTF, team deathmatch, etc. Onslaught is even better. CTF also looks much better in UT2004.

There seems to be alot of empty servers, though.

For Onslaught lovers: there is a new Bonus Pack, which adds three new vehicles, and modifications on the original Onslaught maps to include those new vehicles.

Vehicles are:

Cicada: a very fast, flying machine. Seats 2, with seeking rockets and bombardment shells

Paladin: somewhat like Canada's new Mobile Gun System: an eight-wheeled vehicle with a tank turrent mounted on top. Fires a slow-moving plasma shot and has a shield similar to the alt-fire of the shieldgun.

SPMA: a mobile direct and indirect fire artillery vehicle. Seats 2. Fires fast shells like the Goliath, and fires remote cameras (similar to the translocator camera) to fire indirectly at targets on the far side of hills and walls. Very cool.

I like the new bonus pack, but I find the SPMA and the Paladin are far too quiet for such enormous vehicles. Think how loud the Hellbender is; the Paladin makes less noise than the Manta.

There are also new player models - including new takes on the Skaarj and the return of the Necris.

IMPORTANT - Don't bother going anywhere for the download except www.macfpsgames.com. Most other sites provide a broken download link that cuts off around the half-way point in the download. The www.macfpsgames.com download worked perfectly, but you have to have the new v3323 of UT2004 to use it.

Reload. Rev Up. Ride Out.
