I confess that yes, that's the type of place I look at *consumer* Windows laptops. I should have qualified my earlier post with the term "consumer" laptops, which are as far as I've been able to determine 100% glossy.

I also checked Dell and HP and couldn't find any consumer-level laptops with matte screens, or the option to pick.

If you say there are "tons" of them out there, I'll take your word for it. But it's clear to me that consumers prefer glossy -- which is why Apple *followed* the WinPC makers in making their consumer models all-glossy.

I'd hardly consider Apple's premium laptop line consumer oriented. And if consumers prefer glossy, fine, then make a glossy line. For the professionals out there (not merely the ones who are using pro-level apps but those of us who make a living with our computers) who prefer matte, at the very least keep it as an option. The last thing I need is another company telling me what I need instead of listening to what I want.

You can go on as much as you want. Two professionals have weighed in on this thread and both of us prefer matte. However unscientific that may be, it's still 100% of us.

How about Apple's cinema displays? Are they glossy or matte? Don't bother, it's a rhetorical question...

As far as your comment about being spoiled is concerned, you forgot to mention not only matte screens but a stable & decent OS, overall usability, lack of viruses, etc., no? If expecting a better computing experience from Apple qualifies me as such, then I guess I am spoiled.

I'm done here.

I can't claim to be a "professional" but I have spent over 20 years on Macs in the newspaper game and now the web.

I hope this MBP lasts forever with my matte screen.

Glossy screens do nothing for my computer experience, especially in Photoshop and outdoor use. Apple is making a big mistake catering to the masses with the pro line.

It's the MBP users who pay a premium for a top of the line lappy. Apple should remember that and retain the option to have matte.

I'm a pro who scans and retouches for a living and remember the days when some used to buy anti-glare screens for their CRTs.

IMO by not offering a matte display option on their "professional" laptop, Apple has dramatically embraced the consumer mind set. The juiced-up colour and apparent higher contrast of the "shiny" screen may be great for the multi-media viewers, but it's painful for the multimedia creators, photographers and imaging pros.

I'm feeling that in general, the Pro end of Apple has been withering for quite some time. One machine, one screen...and even those only get updated whenever Steve changes turtlenecks.

If Apple can flog 9 flavours (some not so tasty) of nanos, you'd think they could lead by example, on the "matte for pros" side of things.

If the ACDs go glossy, Apple's chips will be all in.

Though I'm not a professional by far, I think it's absurd that Apple has limited their offerings to glossy only. What would they be losing by offering a matte option? I would much rather please a larger gamut of customers by offering the option of either. As much as I would like to upgrade to a MBP, I am having a difficult time convincing myself that the time is right. My MacBook is running so smoothly. It's does everything I want it to do. PS runs fine. Better graphics would help with some of my work, but I may want to hold out until Nehalem is released.
