Keeping my Time Machine HD mounted

Hi,
Is there a way to keep my time machine volume mounted?

I want to browse through my backups without using Time Capsule, and also want to move some of the stuff I had moved off to the TM volume to make space for some of our wedding pictures.

Now, when I copy the stuff back over, it starts, but when the backups are done it auto-unmounts the TM volume, and my move/copy are stopped.

Thanks,

In Finder preferences

make sure "Show these items on the desktop" has 'Connected servers' checked.
