Question

Just curious if anyone has seen the new iMac G5's in person?

I'm trying to figure out if there is a big difference between the 17" and 20" screens quality, before I order.

If it is anything like the iMac G4 17" and 20" screens, then the only difference you'll notice initially will be the size

The contrast ratio is the same for both G5 models, but the 20" is a little brighter (230 cd/m^2 vs 200 cd/m^2 on the 17"). Pixel response time, unfortunately, is not listed on the Apple site.

I'm concerned about the viewing angle, Apple shows 90 and 120 degree for the 17". 170 and 170 degree for the 19"
So I'm curious if that's a big difference.

I Should have made that more clear I guess.

Question, then: How often do you suppose you'd be looking at the screen from an angle other than straight on or close to it?

As I was walking into my nearest reseller today (Simply Computing in Langley), they were unpacking a 17" G5 iMac. So I guess I've seen one in person, but I didn't see it in action. Going back to all the comments when it was first announced, it IS stable. And while it clearly is not as "fun" as the FP iMac, it does look very professional. The extra white space at the bottom did not trouble me in any way, nor did it cause a tremor in The Force.

If I hadn't already blown my Mac budget (an oxymoron if ever there was one) for the year, I'd be thinking about getting one.

I do a lot of business documents and graphics for my wife, she directs me from the sidelines in what she likes. She can't see the screen properly on my Pismo when sitting off to the side, so I have to use a second CRT monitor so she can see the stuff. I also want to clean up the desk by getting rid of the monitor and have only the iMac.

To see the screen properly on the Pismo you have to be at the 90 deg vertical and up to the 120 deg horizontal. The same as what Apple says for the 17" iMac G5, which to me, isn't any better than the Pismo for viewing.

Cost wise, I'd rather go with the 17", but if nobody can see the screen from different angles then I will go with the 20".

If you need the wider viewing angle, then the 20" is going to be a must for you.

A word of warning, though, that even if an LCD looks all right from the side the colour and brightness still shift somewhat. The viewing angle listed is a maximum, after all.

The 20" G4 iMac, FWIW, is very clear and very nice at some fairly extreme angles.

Hanging in Austin, TX this weekend and checked out the 17" and 20" iMac G5s, side-by-side. (Barton Creek Mall, Capital of Texas Highway, Austin, TX.)

Compared to non-Apple generic 17/20" LCDs (i.e. FutureShop specials), there's little comparison. Side-to-side viewing angle is large, contrast is top-notch, though as someone noticed the 20" feels brighter (likely the larger screen.)

The pivot 'hinge' is a thing of elegance. It just works.

At first glance, the 17" looks like a lot of plastic surrounding a small screen.. but once you get closer to it, it gets more visually comfortable.

One thing I found odd was that the plastic is the ol' shiny/fingerprint showing plastic of the dual-USB iBooks, not the matte finish of the new iBooks. Though no one looks at the case, as the screen is visually compelling.

Thanks to everyone, I think I'll go with the 20"
With all the work I'm doing designing a store [graphics, logos, furnishings in CAD etc] I'll need the extra screen space anyways.

any iMac sightings in GTA??! Was going to call Sat to see if there were any on display yet. Still cannot believe that I still own my DV 400, officially 2 generations and countless revisions behind.

H!
