Excellent student iPhone deal!

I was at Fido in the Eaton's centre today and I was just curious what their plans were. Apparently there is a plan for $17.50 a month which gets you 200 day times minutes and unlimited evenings and weekends starting at 5 pm-8 am. With the $11 call display, voicemail and 125 test messages you are at $28.50 plus fees and taxes.

The lady said it is a compatible iPhone plan and the only other condition is you have to have student ID and sign a 3 year contract.

That is a seriously good deal. The promotion is apparently going until September 20th. So I think I will go down there tomorrow night and pick one up. This is better than rogers saying you have to be over $35 dollars to be eligible for the iPhone! I hope it pans out tomorrow.

One little question, the lady tried to scare me into getting data saying that you cannot block edge or 3g and you might end up with one of those $600 horror stories. Can someone confirm with me that you can in fact block all data for your account.

So glad I am still technically a student!

You don't have to have a voice plan over $35 to get an iPhone.. That's just so you can knock $50 off the iPhone price.

It's actually going on until the end of October and you don't have to be a student.

Yes blocking data is easy. Be sure to mention that you are blocking data on an iPhone though, as I believe it is a two step process (blocking two different feeds).

Why are Canadians in love with the 3 year contract?? What will you do when an even better plan comes along in 6 months time? Does anyone do the math for total ownership cost? (full monthly fee x 36 + cost of phone).

On Rogers/fido you can switch your plan anytime for no fee, and the likelihood of another GSM carrier going live anytime soon is nil. If you're going to be using the same carrier for 3 years anyways, you might as well get the reduced handset pricing as a benefit. As you point out though the main cost is your monthly plan, so it should be good enough to merit signing up.

Are you with Rogers or Fido for the my 5 canadian wide deal?

I went to Rogers and the guy tried to suck me in saying you can only get my 10 canada wide for like 50 bucks in a package and that the my 5 deals are only local.

If you wouldn't mind could you please pass along the plan you got and what it is called I supppose. Thanks!
