new monitor's brightness...

Is it too much?
I'm ready to buy a new iMac 24 in 2,8Ghz and, after I see one in store,
I'm not sure I find it better than my previous iMac 17 in as far as the
realism of the screen is concerned.
Is someone had the same apprehension and forgot it after a while
of use...?
Thank you to share your experience with me.

I don't use an iMac but I can't imagine that they don't have a brightness control.

If it is just the brightness that is worrying you then I would say don't worry about it, I am sure you would be able to adjust the brightness.

Now if it is the glossy screen that bothers you, then that is a different matter. If you want to upgrade but don't want the glossy screen, try the refurb section at the Apple store, there are sometimes previous generation iMacs (pre glossy screen) available there or check for used ones here in the classifieds or elsewhere.

The iMac does have a screen brightness control. On the included keyboard, the F1/F2 keys function as brightness down/brightness up, respectively.

Yes, the glossy screen is another thing. I wasn't sure about it at first either, but now that I'm used to it, I think it actually looks very nice. As long as you don't have bright lights shining on it from behind you, glare shouldn't be a problem.

I agree with scr and del, it's very easy controlling brightness on the imac, I do find it a tad bright than the older matte screens, even when brightness is brought down to the lowest setting.

You need to keep lighting in front of you instead of behind or at the side, thats when you get heavy reflection which can be annoying.

Agreed, I have a 24" iMac and it's fine when I'm doing normal computing but I usually turn it 90 degrees from where it normally faces to watch TV from my bed and that's when I get some window reflections. Nothing drastic, it's definitely tollerable but if you're not used to a glossy screen it's something to take note of.

edit: I also have a 17" iMac and the 24" display is 100% mind-blowingly better

Glossy screen

You were right to think I'd rather mean glossy screen than brightness (indeed, English isn't my first language, you had understand it)...
Your answers are the way I'd wish... and I think I'll go ahead and proceed buying my new iMac 20 or 24 in with this glossy screen

Thank you very much.

Hey Claude no problem with interpreting what you meant. You were very brave to post to an English forum in the first place, I sure wouldn't have the ability to post to a French forum. I hope you enjoy your new iMac.

There is a number of other reasons to get the 24'. Number one is the better video card. You'll really like the machine once you get the lighting right for glossy monitor.
