I finally was able to get my 3.5 acomdata drive enclosure open, I discovered that the drive is an IDE drive which is fine, I was hoping for SATA but this will do... The current drive in there is WD 160 GB. I want to replace it with 500 or maybe a 750gb drive. Do certain enclosures only support up to a certain amount of drive size?
From this thread it looks like your Acomdata enclosure may use the INIC-1610 SATA-USB 2 chipset. I quickly skimmed through the PDF datasheet for it and it didn't seem to mention anything about an upper limit to hard drive support. I've also looked over the specs for the other two most likely chipsets your enclosure could have (the Oxford 924 and the Prolific PL-2571) and they don't mention anything about maximum supported drives, either.
However, I keep seeing "up to 750 GB drives supported" popping up whenever I see listings for SATA drive enclosures, so I think you should be okay if you want to put a 750 GB drive in it. Still, it's a good idea to check the return policy on the place you're getting your drive from.

To answer your more generalized question. Yes certain enclosures do only support up to a maximum drive size. You should always check the manufactures web site first to make sure that the enclosure will support the drive size you want to put in it. In some cases you can flash the firmware to go beyond the original size limitation.
the light is on and the drive is spinning as I can hear it... but still nothing in finder, disc utility or systemprofiler showing there is an external drive attached!!!
I don't know much about your particular enclosure, but the power requirements for the 500 GB + drives is considerably higher. It may be spinning, but not fast enough. Does the drive enclosure have an internal or external PS.

so for the record these acomdata enclosures will NOT work with 500GB drives
I put the old 160 GB back in just to make sure it wasn't the cables or connections, and it works fine. SO looks like I need to pick up a new enclosure like mikejavo said.
I'm using the AcomData
E5 External Hard Drive
USB 2.0 & FireWire 400
