Unless it's a really expensive printer it has been my experience that it's really not worth it to even try this route. With the price of new printers these days it's probably cheaper to replace it than it would be to get it working via USB.
The printer is an HP laserjet 6P. The printer works well for balck and white. If I could fidn an inexpensive solution i would go for it. I hate to throw this printer in the trash. Maybe I can recycle it.
I still have an old tank of an HP Laserjet 4p, and it's a parallel printer.
The thing won't die, so i can't justify buying a new one.
Rather then buying a Parallel to USB adapter (i think around $20 from tigerdirect) i ended up picking up a cheap parallel print server (old HP jetdirect), and put the printer on my network for easy printing access from any computer in the house. Works like a charm.

BReligion, it looks like you have been down this road and solved the problem. Congratulations. This is exactly waht I am looking for. Can you please be more specific on the parts that are required and where I could buy them. Also the hook up. I am sure that it would help others also.

I also have an old HP LJ 6P that works great. It's hooked up to my AEBS via a USB to IEEE1284 cable and works flawlessly with all the Macs in the house.

Yeah, i picked up an HP Jetdirect EX plus external print server for like $10 off ebay.. it's a very basic 10 Mbps print server (no web gui, but telnet configurable). It does TCP/IP, IPX/SPX, Appletalk, DLC/LLC. It's a parallel cable between the print server and the printer, and a standard ethernet cable between the print server and your home router or switch or hub or whatever.
When you first power it up, if you have it connected to you home router, it's running on DHCP/BootP so it's pretty ready to go out out of the box. With that in mind, all the Network protocols are on (i turned everything off except TCP/IP). Print a test page, get the ip from it then telnet to it and config a static address if that's what you want.. pretty straight forward.
If you want something a little more user friendly tho, you could spend a few more bucks and get something that has a web interface (a more pricey HP, or Lantronix MPS 100 (i have one of those as well))
Feel free to fire me a PM if / when you decide to pick up one.. I can help you with the telnet config if you need it. By no means am i saying this is the way you have to go, just that's what worked here

1-Mac Book pro
1-Efficient netoworks Speedstream 6300 DSL/wireless router from sympatico.
1-paralell printer (b/w) HP 6P

My objective is to connect the 2 printers so that I have acces to both of them from my computers. Currently both computers are on my wireless router.
My router has one USB connection but it is a B type connector (square).
