Thanks for all your help. I am on Tiger 10.4.9 It is getting too late to do all this now so tomorrow morning I will hook up the Airport and see if it will work as a base. I am assuming that I don't have to do anything except plug it into the modem and into the main computer and install it in the main computer. If it works there then I will hard reset it and connect the dlink and try again with the printer in the other room. If I am on the right track could you let me know and if not could you correct me. I will check ehmac before I do anything! Thanks again for your help.
If you are using WEP change it to WPA or WPA2 personal and set it to "Join a wireless network". This should get you on to your wireless network. Be sure you put a check mark next to Airtunes and give it a name for your speakers. And finally, open iTunes and look at the lower right corner of the window and select your new speaker name from the drop down menu.
PS Apple airport's don't like WEP but if you have to use it, try putting a "$" (without quotes) in front of the password when entering it in to the express.
Thanks for the feedback. I don't know what or where I would find WEP or the other "W" that you refer to. Could someone please explain the terms so that I can connect correctly. I had no idea it would be so much trouble. It certainly isn't a "plug 'n play" arrangement! I really appreciate the help.
I am now ready to test the airport express. I had misplaced the dlink cd so did not want to mess with anything til I found it! Can I just install the airport cd on the main computer to access the assistant or do I have to deinstall the dlink first? How do I let the system know which wireless to use if I have 2 installed? or do I just hook the airport to the modem and plug it in?
Do not deinstall the DLink. Set security on DLink first to WPA or WPA2 personal. Install airport utility software and run it to set up the airport. Note: Airport software will read the airport, changes will not take effect till you click on the update button. Set airport to join existing network and enter WPA security settings. Click on update button.
When finished, you will have only one wireless network not two. The light on the airport should turn a steady green if you entered the information properly.
When I was talking about deinstalling the dlink I was referring to testing the apple express to see that it was working because when I installed it on my laptop, I got a message that said that there was an error on the installation of the airport card which came installed on the laptop. Malco had suggested I test the airport express on the main computer to see if it would set up a wireless system so that was what I was attempting to do. I see from the posts that I should be able to add the printer in another room using the express, but I can't seem to get the express to read the dlink wireless network. I don't know if there is something I have to do to get the airport card to work on the laptop or if the problem is with the express. It just flashes amber.
