Leopard versus Frankenmac!

While Leopard is running slower than Tiger on my 1.25GHz G4 Mini, it's still very fine. About the only visual impediment is a slightly choppy Dock animation. Everything else seems fine.

And as for my sawtooth "Frankenmac" (see specs in sig), I was curious as to whether or not the Leopard installer would tummy the 100MHz fsb and 2X AGP. Well, the cat installed no probs! Leopard did kill my USB wireless adaptor driver, however Luckily, I installed Leopard on a separate drive inside Frankenmac, leaving Tiger to handle wireless activities. At this stage my deployment of Leopard has been very restrained, with no mission critical systems running it YET.

While Leopard installed well on Frankie, like the Mini it is running a little slower. Still seems quite usable. See attached Geekbench and xBench scores.

The talk out there is that Leopard flies on the Intel platform. The irony is that I've not yet installed it on my sole MacIntel, which is critical to my use. In particular, Logic Pro. I might wait for the first point-oh update for Leopard before going that way.

Thanks.

I upgraded to Leopard on the Intel but was holding off on the 1.42GHz G4 Mini. Sounds like it was a good move.

Well, don't let me report scare you off of that notion. While xBench and Geekbench report Leopard as being slower by the numbers, both aged G4 systems are running it fine. I'm happy with the results, and the added benefits of Leopard -- particularly the ease to connect over the network as well as Time Machine (once I've set it up for total network access of all three of my Macs) -- will balance out any performance issues I may come across (so far nil in actual use).

If you have a lot of RAM in your Mini, I say go for it!

Which version of Logic Pro are you running these days, Macaholic? have you installed 8 yet? Am I allowed to ask this question without starting a new thread?

Maca most of the slow down is graphic/finder related - Leopard is not happy with your video card. That may be driver related.
If it's the stock Rage 128 card we found the same problem and a switch to a 32 bit card made a world of difference on a lowly G4 450 single.

Your drive is also a bit slower which may relate to where the testing was done on the drive. If it's getting full it will slow down a bunch.

MacDoc, the GPU is the 64MB Radeon 9000 Pro, and the drives are 7200rpm 8MB Hitachis running off an ATA133 card in one of Frank's PCI slots -- and as in my sig Frank's sporting dual 1.3GHz G4s. All pretty "jiggy" for a Sawtooth

Vacuvox, I'm still on Logic Pro 7. I'm thinking of installing it on Frankie, just to see if it crashes much under Leopard. My current LOGIC rig is my MBP.

You might try one of the Radeon driver installs - clearly the card is capable of better performance than is showing.

Radeon® Series Drivers and Software for Mac OS X 10.4.x and 10.3.x

Noted, but won't Leopard have more recent drivers than these? I'll give 'em a whirl, but these drivers are two years old
