Thanks for the comments everyone - I'll see if I can pick up a copy of PS Elements at the computer store at work... I wonder if I can get it at educational pricing.
FYI, read this link about OpenOSX and Fink then download Fink and get constantly updated opensource software for free.
There are 3700 pkgs available. Check out the graphics list.

A couple of free ones are ToyViewer and PixelNhance. ToyViewer can be downloaded via VersionTracker. PixelNhance is no longer available from the developer, but you may be able to find a copy kicking around somewhere on the web. Of course, if you can afford Photoshop Elements, go for it. I'm just thinking either of the free ones might be good enough for simple retouching.

Late as usual, but I bought PS Elements 2.0 and it's great.

You can also use GraphicConverter for free until you pay
the $30 shareware fee, This program is well worth the money.
(It has a red eye filter setting)

Actually I tried using GraphicConverter to retouch a picture, but it wouldn't work. I got a message saying that the colour palette in the picture was too large or something. I didn't want to reduce the picture to 256 colours. But in general, this is a very good app; I used it all the time on my old 7200/90, and on my FP iMac.
I should drop by our computer store today at lunch to see what the educational price of PS Elements is...
