How to shut the start-up music?

Hi Mac fans!!

I have a quick question...

Every time I boot my Macbook, the annoying little music plays loud from the computer's speakers... I have external speakers connected to it but it still comes from the computer's speakers...

Is there a way to mute it??

I wouldn't mind that much, but I wake up early every morning and the "boot music" annoys every one in my home...

Thanks for any tips!!

If you mute the sound before you shutdown it should stay muted when the system boots back up.

How hell is the sound from a macboooks speakers loud enough to bother anyone??

I'm assuming this "little music" is the startup chime?

Just Googled 'disable startup chime os x' and found this:
Startup Chime Stopper 2.6 software download - Mac OS X - VersionTracker

Post your results.

I tried to mute to volume before shutting down my computer but it doesn't work.

Thanks for helping though! Hopefully, Leopard will have a way to mute it...

if you are using external speakers that show up in system prefs as a different output (headphones, USB speakers etc.) you can disconnect them, so that the mac is outputing to the built in speakers, then set the speaker volume to nothing (off) and then reconnect you externals. you should be able to set a seperate level for them and then you won't get the start up chime.

Dissabling the start up compleatly takes away a valuble diagnostic tool that should only be done if your sure that know the side effects.

Z.

P.S. I've done both methods myself.

System Preferences => Sound => Output => Internal Speakers => Output Volume => Mute (or at least, turn the volume down to near minimum)

It's a Mac. Don't overthink it.

A very long time ago I installed this System Pref:

Arcana Research

Just set it and forget it. Its awesome, and free. It automatically adjusts your volume when you shutdown and then sets if back where it was after your computer starts up. I have my startup volume at one notch, just enough to hear it (so I know its starting up) but not high enough to bother anyone.

Cheers!
