External Wi-Fi Access in EyeTV 2.5?

EyeTV has been updated today to version 2.5 and now has a very interesting feature. You can activate Wi-Fi access to your videos from an iPod touch or iPhone. The TV shows you record will automatically be correctly formatted for the multi-touch devices and will play over your local network. By typing a address like http://192.168.2.160:2170/eyetv/ (example taken from the eyeTV ReadMe), you'll get access to an "iPhone"-styled-and-sized webpage where you'll be able to launch the videos.

I was wondering if it would be possible to make this page accessible over the Internet by myself only and in a secure manor, not putting my computer or others on my network at risk? I sent an e-mail to their support site. Here's their answer :

EyeTV doesn't really care if the Wi-Fi Access is local, or far away. It just goes to a certain address, and looks for the EyeTV server.

However, your home computer would have to have a static IP that's exposed to the world, with the right ports open. "Port Forwarding" could also be used.

In short, right now it would be quite complicated, but we'll see if we can come up with a tutorial. I wouldn't be surprised if some of our users come up with something themselves, and share it with others soon.

In the future, we'll look into making such Internet access a potential part of EyeTV, but I can't say for certain if or when that would happen.

So, I assume there must be some smart people here. Would anyone know how to set up eyeTV and my Mac so I can securely access my show from afar?

I think the easiest way would be to use something like Dynamic DNS (dyndns.com) which gives your home computer a static link (like myimac.dyndns.org). With the port forwarded correctly (or placed in the DMZ in a router) anyone accessing myimac.dyndns.org:2170/eyetv/ should be able to connect.

Is there a way to make sure I'm the only person who can access the eyeTV server?

See if EyeTV has an option for changing the port and directory - it's highly unlikely for someone to guess yourmac:8771/keepout/

Try this out. Seems like a username and password are needed. This is a direct copy and paste from a 9to5mac.com forum post:

Movies are streamable by using Telekinesis (google it)

1. Download Telekinesis
2. Install Telekinesis on your mac
3. Set your password
4. Make sure the APP is running
5. Go to IPCHICKEN.COM to get your IP ADDRESS
6. Type the IP ADDRESS + the number given to you on the Telekinesis website into your iPHONE Safari browser
7. Type in your username and password to log in from your iPHONE (or a computer running safari)

You are in, now you just need to find your movies and click them to watch them.

The movies must be in the correct format.
1. iTunes Movies will stream - nothing extra to do
2. Handbrake movies
a. Open Handbrake
b. Insert Disc, select source, choose the DVD you just inserted
c. go to preferences and choose "Use iPod/iTunes friendly (.m4v) file extension for MP4 output file" then click okay (not necessary, but I do it to be safe and to keep my movies organized)
d. click the iPOD format, go to Codecs and select MPEG-4 Video/AAC Audio
e. change the Average bitrate (kbps) to 1000 (I do it to cut down on size)
f. click Start (30 minutes later you have a streamable movie)

Drop the movie in your iTUNES catalog if you are like me and like your stuff stored together and like the guy above said, you could theoretically have an iPhone with unlimited storage.

Telekinesis also works great with the music, pdf files, word or excel documents (viewing only), and you can even access your built in camera or iSight camera from your hosting computer.

Actually, this is what a slingbox does, it streams your TV over your home network or over the internet. The one hitch is that the slingbox has to be hard-wired to a router, but that router can be a wireless router. The slingbox doesn't have a wi-fi card in it, which would be slightly better.

I tried Telekinesis last night. Works great. The program is called iPhone Remote. Once you install the program, you set a username and password. In iPhone Remote preferences, you set Share media insecurely. I would definitely use a crazy username and password. Get your IP address from your Network in System Prefs and then post in your url https://IPaddress:5010 and you will access your home network after logging in with your username and password. You will see a screen that will fit perfectly on the iPhone/Touch and you will have access to your movies, shows, music etc. You can even access external drives, which I think is really cool. In Sharing in System Prefs., go to Firewall and select New and enter port 5010 for Port Forwarding and name it iPhone Remote or whatever you wish.
