How clear is the new emac display? My 8 year old 15 inch crt resolution can go up to 1600 x 1200 at 256 colours. The computer I have with it is also 8 years old which is one of the reasons I want the new emac. Is the emac screen blurry and hard on the eyes?
I'd also like to know if there is such thing as an external grapics card that can hook up to the computer like an external hard drive. Thanks for all your help again!
In the summer of 2002 I purchased an eMac, hoping to use it at home for light image retouching and color correcting. The monitor on the unit I bought suffered from "chromatic abnomalities" in both of the bottom corners. (Both bottom corner areas had a bluish-green tint.) Apple agreed to replace the eMac but the replacement had the same problem and an attempt at replacing the monitor (and video board) also failed to correct the problem. I eventually settled on upgrading to an iMac.
To this day, I have never seen an eMac that *doesn't* suffer from this problem which I do concede is not usually noticable to someone not concerned about color fidelity and who always has a non-single-color desktop background.
Occasionally, and just for fun, when I 'm in a store with eMac's on display, I'll fill the eMac's screen with a solid grey background or document to see if the problem persists. I have yet to see one that has consistent color along the bottom of the screen. (Including the two eMac's I tried a few weeks ago at Apple's NYC Soho store.)
Apart from this issue, the eMac is a great little computer at a good price. Were there not an issue with the monitor, I'd much rather have it at home than my iMac.
that sounds like the crt reacting to a magnetic field. possibly the two speakers mounted in the bottom of the case are too close to the crt and/or are not shielded properly?

I just filled my screen with grey, then with four different colours. Sorry to disappoint you, but mine is flawless including along the bottom.
Like I said it is a very first model 700 Mhz machine. A friend who bought the same model as I, when called tried the same thing and there is no colour distortion of any kind, so your theory about "all" eMacs is not correct, at least not with two that I know of.
The "72Mz" or actually the 72 Hz, or "hertz," (frequency) is the refresh rate of the monitor (which doesn't exist in LCD's). The higher the refresh rate, the clearer and more crisp the image on the screen is. Anything above 75 Hz is considered decent, while anything above 90 Hz is considered above excellent. Anything over 100 Hz, and that's one heck of a good CRT monitor. You will notice the refresh rate drops as the resolution gets bigger, and that's due to the increase in pixels on the screen, which, depending on the quality of the monitor, takes longer to refresh. The lower the refresh rate, the less clear, crisp and more blurry the image on the screen becomes - check out a monitor at 60 Hz - it hurts my eyes.
That was the general thought by everyone having the problem at the time. However, Apple repeatedly said the speakers were adequately shielded.

Fair enough - I'm glad to hear that as I do like the eMac and it's good that there are some out there that have good monitors. Funny though, after posting this morning I was at the Future Shop on Eglinton in Toronto and I did the grey screen thing with their one eMac on display. Yup... tinted corners. I suppose it's a bit of a lottery. Unfortunately, as I do color critical work, and Apple forces it's no-return repair-only policy on it's resellers, I can't take the gamble in getting another one.
