Quicktime and .avi files...some work, others don't.
I have a few .avi files and some of them work with QT. Others do not and I am forwarded to another page and told to download the correct codec. Well how do I know which 'codec' i need to run .avi? I have flip4mac, i have divx. In the meantime I use VLC....but VLC doesn't pop up when I use front row.
Any ideas? |

Try Perian
Perian - The swiss-army knife of QuickTimeŽ components .. it's the most complete codec pack for the Mac that I've come across. |

If that divx is the plugin be sure to remove it before installing perian. When you have them both installed it sometimes screw up the playback. You don't need to remove the flip4mac plugin.

![]() I get the occasional error with QT as well, and it's quite annoying since the page it refers to never actually has what it's looking for, and come to think of it, never really says what component is missing in the first place. Hopefully this'll fix the audio problem I've been getting quite frequently recently. |

Okay, I went in and deleted divx codec....i didn't know if there was an un-install option, so I just deleted it from the applications folder. I've since installed Perian. but the video's still don't work. QT forwards me to that codec site and instructs me to download a codec (although it doesn't say which one) Is there something I have to do to Perian for it to function?
All video's work with VLC |

Check the codec in Quicktime by going under one of the menus (maybe the Window menu?) and choosing "Movie Info". It will tell you the codec that was used to format the movie. The .avi file you have is probably encoded in Indeo Video, which doesn't appear to be playable in OS X (there is an OS 9 compatible quicktime codec for it somewhere).
